Bill O'Reilly fired from Fox News, hours after meeting Pope Francis

Meanwhile, O'Reilly's departure will dramatically alter the Fox nightly lineup.

Following the memo, Fox announced "Tucker Carlson Tonight" will begin airing an hour earlier to fill the time slot vacated byO'Reilly.

NY magazine reported Wednesday, based on unnamed sources, that Rupert Murdoch and sons James and Lachlan, who run Fox parent 21st Century Fox, had decided that O'Reilly was out and executives were planning the exit.

"We've had conversations behind the scenes with corporations, both in writing and over the phone, and when the latest news broke, both his disparaging, racist and sexist remarks about Congresswoman Waters, as well the announcement of the settlement, we realized that there was nothing that we could do but give these corporations one last chance", Robinson explained.

The downfall of Fox's most popular - and most lucrative - personality began with an April 1 report in The New York Times that five women had been paid a total of $13 million to keep quiet about disturbing encounters with O'Reilly, who continued to deny any wrongdoing in a statement hours after he was sacked.

But after the New York Times report, advertisers including BMW of North America, Allstate Corp, French pharmaceuticals maker Sanofi SA and T. Rowe Price, pulled their advertising from O'Reilly's primetime "The O'Reilly Factor" show. And you, his audience, responded in record numbers, making "The Factor" the number one cable news show for more than 16 years. "Personally, I think he shouldn't have settled".

With a profit center gone, 21st Century Fox stock fell nearly 1 percent Wednesday in heavy trading.

Lemon explained why he thinks O'Reilly's downfall is "the biggest story of the day", pointing out that President Trump has recently defended him in the midst of the controversy. But Fox said Wednesday that wouldn't happen.

"It's like looking at your front yard and the big oak tree is just gone", Colbert said.

Tennessee Senate OKs Haslam's road funding bill
During a six hour discussion of the bill in the House of Representatives, an alternative plan was proposed by Rep. Sexton has called it a "farce" to argue that tax cuts in Haslam's package are larger than the fuel tax increases.

Christian radio host Eric Metaxas tweeted: "The news about Bill O'Reilly is tremendously sad".

Mr O'Reilly has been off the air since last Wednesday, part of what was billed as a planned vacation around the Easter holiday.

He was photographed in Rome shaking Pope Francis' hand on Wednesday. Fox News has demonstrated again and again the strength of its talent bench.

O'Reilly was a ratings magnet at Fox - but it's hard to know how much of his audience would follow him to another network.

O'Reilly's departure will not have any effect on Twenty-First Century Fox's overall profitability, said Brian Wieser, an analyst at Pivotal Research.

O'Reilly's attorney claimed on Tuesday that his client - a long-time conservative media icon - had been the target of a "smear campaign" financed by leftwing activist organisations.

But even after the ouster, some employees said they were skeptical about whether the treatment of women at Fox News would actually change. He has also had best-sellers with everything from the memoir "A Bold Fresh Piece of Humanity" to his most recent work, "Old School", which includes passages urging the respectful treatment of women. "These corporations have known about O'Reilly for a long time".
