British Parliament backs PM's call for June general election over 'Brexit'

"The president considers that the real political negotiations on article 50 with the United Kingdom will start after the elections foreseen for the 8th of June", Schinas told a press conference in Brussels without saying whether May had made the suggestion. "Every vote for the Conservatives will make me stronger when I negotiate for Britain with the European Union", she said. "I will be asking for the British people for a mandate to complete Brexit and make a success of it".

That's what I've fought for all my life and for now I'm not going to be fighting for those things in the House of Commons.

The pound rallied on speculation that ms May will be returned with a stronger mandate, but this caused London's FTSE 100 index, which features many multinationals earning in dollars, to fall.

The seat with the narrowest Labour majority is Halifax where the Conservatives finished just 428 votes behind Labour in the 2015 General Election.

That term could only be curtailed if the Commons voted with a two-thirds majority for a snap election, or if it passed a motion of no confidence in the government.

As Britain enters an extremely important period in its political future, various MPs assembled this afternoon to discuss and debate the Prime Minister's recent decision to call a snap election.

But Mr Corbyn is apparently facing an uphill struggle, with a fresh YouGov opinion poll for the Times giving the Tories a 24-point lead over Labour, despite his denial that his party's defeat is a "foregone conclusion".

But as she spoke, Mr Corbyn explicitly ruled out any post-election coalition with the SNP, insisting that he would not do a deal with Nicola Sturgeon's party to forge a so-called "progressive alliance", as hers was not a progressive party.

He told MPs earlier in the Commons: "We welcome the opportunity of a general election because it gives the British people the chance to vote for a Labour government that will put the interests of the majority first".

Labour leader says United Kingdom election 'establishment vs people'
Labour MP John Woodcock openly slammed Jeremy Corbyn in a scathing Facebook post. We truly are at a crossroads for Britain's future. Tories dub opposition 'coalition of chaos'.

The lawmakers approved the proposal, 522-13, after 90 minutes of debate to move the election up three years in a bid by the Conservative Party to expand its role in government and give better clout in negotiating Brexit.

Mrs May replied: "I know it's taken you a little time to get the hang of these Prime Minister's Questions but I have to say to you that week in, week out you stand up and ask me questions and I respond to those questions".

May is adamant she will not take part in a televised debate in the run-up to the vote, despite numerous MPs calling for her to do so.

"The Prime Minister also says this campaign will be about leadership".

The Prime Minister said she believed campaigning should be getting "out and about" meeting voters.

"The decision facing the country will be clear".

She said: "What people want is for us to have control of our borders".

The returning officer overseeing the Manchester Gorton by-election has said she has no power to cancel the ballot with voters in the constituency due to elect a new MP on May 4.
