Cycling to work halves disease risk, finds massive new study

The study found just two hours of physical activity during your commute a week are needed to get the benefits from lowered risk of heart attack, stroke and death, meaning you needn't walk or cycle to work every single day. "Initiatives to encourage and support active commuting could reduce risk of death and the burden of important chronic conditions".

"A shift from auto to more active modes of travel will also decrease traffic in congested city centres and help reduce air pollution, with further benefits for health", added Professor Lars Bo Andersen, from the Western Norwegian University of Applied Sciences. The reduced risk of cardiovascular disease was only proven, however, if an individual walked at least six miles a week.

"Some cities are taking a leading role in doing that, like London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Cardiff which are doing some fantastic things".

In the study, which was created by experts at the University of Glasgow, it was revealed that although walking to work is good for you, it surprisingly doesn't offer the same benefits as taking a bike.

Jason Torrance of cycling charity Sustrans told The Independent cycling to work was "a proven way for people to improve their health, to help their local economies and to improve their productivity at work".

People who cycle to work are going to look even more pleased with themselves as they clonk up the stairs in their special shoes tomorrow morning, as analysis of health data covering 250,000 people suggests that commuting via bike almost halves the risk of heart disease and cancer.

One of Godwin's daughters , Debbie Godwin, said she wished Stephens had been captured. "I am sorry that all of this has happened". Eleven minutes after that, according to the social media site, he broadcast a live video of himself confessing to the murder.

Experts behind the study said the lower benefits seen for walking compared to cycling could be down to several factors.

Cycling to work slashes the risk of cancer, heart problems or dying early by nearly half, British research shows today.

The study was published yesterday in The BMJ (formerly the British Medical Journal).

Such as the fact cyclists covered longer distances in their commutes than the walkers, cycling is a higher intensity exercise and cyclists were generally more fit.

The study examined how 264,000 people - averaging about 53 years old and pulled from a British database focusing on biological information - got to work each day. Adults who cycled to work for any distance were more than 40 per cent less likely to get cancer, heart disease or die within the next five years.

The researchers believe that their findings suggest that policies created to make it easier for people to commute by bike may present major opportunities for public health improvement.
