EPA seeks to scuttle cleanup of coal power plant pollution

EPA seeks to scuttle cleanup of coal power plant pollution

It was Copeland who ordered the evacuation of the West Calumet residents last summer.

The head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday visited East Chicago, Ind., where people have been living on toxic land for decades. Just last week, new EPA administrator Scott Pruitt issued an administrative stay to delay compliance deadlines limiting effluence from steam electric power generation.

But an EPA official told CNN the initial report saying the agency is considering shutting down the Chicago office is false.

At a press conference, local officials praised Pruitt for visiting the site. It was listed on the "National Priorities List" of the worst contaminated hazardous waste sites in the country in 2009.

The Trump administration indicated in its budget blueprint that it wants to close two regional offices and consolidate its regulatory activities, setting a deadline of June 15 to identify the offices.

The labor union representing Environmental Protection Agency workers at a regional office reportedly on the chopping block are asking for a meeting with the agency's administrator this week. The program is meant to support poor, often minority communities with severe environmental challenges. In attendance were residents, NAACP national President Cornell Williams Brooks and community members.

Netflix Nears 100 Million Subs Mark
Meanwhile, Bloomberg reported that analysts had predicted that Netflix would add 5.49 million new users in the first quarter. EMarketer estimates Netflix will have 128 million viewers in the United States this year, up 6.6% from last year.

Bolling-Williams, who was invited to Pruitt's meeting, said: "Pruitt listened to all of our concerns but he did not offer any solutions". We need to talk.

Ahead of his visit, environmental advocates said they were hopeful that the administrator's arrival might signal additional support for East Chicago's residents, although they also said they have yet to see any indications of pending action.

Pruitt visited the complex and the adjacent residential neighborhood that make up what's known as the USS Lead Superfund site. This year, IN will distribute filters to all residents IN Zones 2 and 3.

With fewer employees and resources, the EPA won't be ready to respond to an environmental emergency like the Flint, Mich. water crisis, he said, where lives could be at stake.

Chanting crowds weaved through streets of East Chicago on Wednesday near a Superfund site.

The leader of the Environmental Protection Agency is scheduled to tour an IN public-housing complex where roughly 1,000 people were ordered evacuated because of lead contamination.

The pair joined other state and federal officials, including Senators Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.) and Todd Young (R-Ind)., meeting with East Chicago officials and community leaders.
