Facebook CEO Announces New AR Studio Development Platform

"I am confident now we are going to push this augmented-reality platform forward", Zuckerberg said, adding that the technology would eventually be incorporated into eyeglasses.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the future of augmented reality (AR) lies in your smartphone camera and not just in special goggles.

"It's going to take a while for this to develop", Zuckerberg acknowledged, adding that Facebook's camera-based platform is launching first in closed beta before becoming publicly available to all developers.

If Facebook's first act was becoming a large social media platform for sharing your reality - posting messages, photos and videos - then its second act will be about augmenting that reality.

The AR experiences will live inside the in-app cameras of Facebook's many apps. "We need an open platform where any developer in the world can build for augmented reality without having to first build a camera and get a lot of people to use it".

Theresa May has said Russian Federation is on the "wrong side of this argument" by failing to condemn a deadly chemical attack in Syria .

To that end, Facebook's next technological leap, now that it is the owner of four out of the five most downloaded apps in the world, is to step into the world of augmented reality. Facebook will raise the bar by doing so, especially to compete against Snap Inc, the maker of Snapchat.

"Augmented reality will let us mix the digital and the physical", Zuckerberg said in his keynote address to 4000 developers, "and that will make our physical reality better". These tools will include precise location mapping, creation of 3D objects from 2D images, and object recognition. Frames made in Frame studio will appear in the cameras of the user's friends or Page fans and will feature the creator's name along with the effect in the camera and in News Feed posts. If your avatar takes a selfie, you tend to smile in real life too, she explained.

If you haven't noticed the little camera on the top left hand side of your Facebook app maybe it's time you checked out it. Facebook "Stories" are a thing now, and this little camera is where you create them.

Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said the company was focused on "building community" among its users.
