Cannabis is legal in eight states and 28 states allow medical marijuana.

Despite this hurdle, the legal marijuana industry generated $6.9 billion in sales in North America previous year, according to cannabis research firm ArcView, up 34% from 2015.

The seed-to-sale electronic tracking system also contains unique registries that will offer patients, caregivers, and practitioners the opportunity to electronically register with the Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Program and access valuable information about the use and benefits of medical marijuana.

Weed pioneer Colorado has a patchwork of local ordinances that in some cases allow pot clubs, but it has no statewide rules.

According to New Frontier, a research company that analyzes the marijuana industry, sales on 4/20 tend to be several times higher than on other days, and discounts play a role in driving that.

The marijuana industry is growing like a weed and seemingly nothing has been able to slow it down in recent years - not even federal law. More and more candidates come out in favor of legalization, or at least a new federal law that would remove the drug from Schedule 1 (which puts it in the same category as heroin or cocaine) and leave it up to states to decide how to handle it without any federal interference. Looney said legislative scenarios tend "to get more fluid then, and people start taking a second look at things they rejected earlier". In 2014, the Justice Department issued guidelines for banks on how to legally provide financial services to state-licensed marijuana businesses. Federal rules against money laundering make it hard for legal weed shops to make large cash deposits at banks. Even when two legal states share a border, as Washington and OR do, carrying weed across state lines runs afoul of federal law.

As cannabis has gained more legal acceptance at the state level, it is also becoming less taboo.
