Netflix Is Quickly Approaching 100 Million Global Subscribers

Netflix Is Quickly Approaching 100 Million Global Subscribers

While new subscribers typically slow during the second quarter, Netflix has predicted 3.2 million additions worldwide for Q2 2017, nearly double the additions in Q2 2016.

The inclination has presented Netflix with more rivalry in the contest for home entertainment budgets.

The streaming video company pushed back the next season of its smash-hit "House of Cards", and other programing to the second quarter, meaning it lured in fewer new subscribers in the first quarter than expected, but will likely make it up from April through June.

Shares of Netflix are up more than 30 percent in the past year.

"With a growing member base spread across the world, we seek to please diverse tastes with a wide breadth of content", Netflix said.

"The opportunity provided to us by the growth of the global internet is enormous and our plan is to keep investing as we increase membership, revenue and operating margins", Netflix CEO Reed Hastings wrote in the quarterly shareholders letter. Netflix now expects to cross the 100 million subscriber threshold in the second quarter; the company projected that it will have 101.95 million total members at the end of Q2.

Earlier this week, a suspected chemical attack hit the town of Khan Sheikhun in Idlib, killing at least 87 civilians, including 31 children.

While Amazon was behind the curve when it came to streaming video and expansion into global markets, the company is quickly making up ground on Netflix, especially when it comes to its commitment producing original content.

Wall Street was expecting 5.27 million new subscribers.

Revenue rose 35 per cent to $2.64 billion in the quarter. "If you own Netflix because you think they are going to add subscribers globally, you're still going to own it". Quarterly revenues of $2.637 billion just missed our consensus estimate of $2.641 billion, but this figure still represents growth of almost 35% year-over-year.

Netflix announced previous year that it was going to invest $6 billion into developing original series and movies with the goal to make about 50 percent of its content original. The service grew by 5 million subscribers during the first three months of 2017, and is to finish the year with 100 million customers in 190 countries.

According to the report from Netflix, the company is investing heavily in paying for and creating original content with high production value, instead of simply licensing content. The company has expanded in stages, and is having more success with older markets. Netflix is now forecasting operating margin at 4.4% in Q2, placing it on track to reach its 7% target for the full year.
