Novice Democrat tops Georgia race, but faces runoff

Here's the takeaway from Tuesday's special election in Georgia's Sixth Congressional District: Democrats and Republicans have reasons to be concerned.

Republicans have held the seat in Georgia's 6th Congressional District for the past 40 years, but Democrats came close to nabbing it on Tuesday.

Another congressional battle will play out late next month in conservative-leaning Montana, where voters will pick a replacement for Republican Ryan Zinke, who has become Trump's U.S. interior secretary.

Ossoff will face Republican candidate Karen Handel in a runoff election in June.

The runoff presents a stiffer challenge.

"One that they backed, Spicer said, "and I think when you look at the total Republican vote, it was over that".

"We have an army of volunteers", he told CNN.

Handel said she got a congratulatory phone call from President Donald Trump Wednesday morning. "It is all Republicans, all hands on deck". The leadership of the Democratic party quickly jumped behind the message with several high-dollar fundraisers hosted by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and New Jersey Democratic Sen.

Trump won the district by only 1.5 percentage points in November against Democrat Hillary Clinton, who drew support from its many college graduates.

The close contest had prompted Mr Trump to take to Twitter to urge Republicans to vote.

Mr Ossoff, who ran on a pledge to "Make Trump Furious", portrayed the NY tycoon as a Washington insider.

Liberal celebrities poured money into Ossoff's campaign in hopes of dealing a blow to Republicans during Trump's first 100 days in office.

The president weighed in again on Wednesday with a tweet saying, "It is now Hollywood vs. Georgia on June 20th".

Ossoff has pitched himself as a check on Trump and an opponent to Washington gridlock.

"Folks in Washington tend to overstate their influence in local races like this", he told MSNBC. "This comes down to grassroots intensity".

Press secretary Sean Spicer said the results marked a "big loss" as they had been anticipating a large win.

"Only the Republicans could try to define this as a defeat for the Democrats", said Porter.
