NYC mayor backs proposal to raise cigarette prices

NYC mayor backs proposal to raise cigarette prices

The measure is part of a package of five Council bills supported by the de Blasio administration that aims to reduce the number of smokers by 160,000 over the next three years.

De Blasio framed his new proposal as being an attack on "Big Tobacco", calling them "public enemy #1".

One of the bills, sponsored by Councilman Corey Johnson (D-Manhattan), raises the minimum per-pack price of cigarettes from $10.50 to $13.

Many argue that increases on cigarette prices are regressive, meaning they disproportionately weigh on the poor and underprivileged. Currently, the minimum is $10.50.

"It will bring us down to the lowest rate of smoking we would have ever had in our history, 12 percent of our population", de Blasio said today at the American Heart Association office.

City and state taxes on a pack of cigarettes already total $5.85, making it the highest in the country.

He added that "there are 29 more times more tobacco sellers than Starbucks in New York City".

Spurs striker Kane: Title race isn't over yet!
However, with United still to play City, Arsenal and Spurs in their final seven games, they still have plenty of work to do. He said: "The pressure is normal". "I prefer to fight for the title instead of don't fight for the title and stay calm".

"These companies have used the same playbook for decades, and we can no longer sit by while the next generation becomes addicted", de Blasio said.

Stores selling cigarettes and e-cigarettes would also be banned from delivering cigarettes, tobacco products and e-cigarettes.

Increasing the price to $13 is expected to decrease adult cigarette smoking by 6.4 percent, according to the mayor's office.

A second measure from Councilman Brad Lander (D-Brooklyn) would prohibit pharmacies from getting licenses to sell cigarettes or - in conjunction with another bill - other tobacco products.

The nation's priciest cigarettes are about to get even more expensive.

Other bills connected to this proposal include residential buildings creating smoking polices and tobacco sales would be banned at pharmacies.

All of the bills in question will be heard in committee on April 27, and have enough backing to make their passage all but certain.
