Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski interrupts White House press briefing

New England Patriots celebrated their Super Bowl 2017 win with President Donald Trump at the White House on April 19th, 2017.

The Super Bowl champs - who play in the AFC East with the New York Jets - joined US president Donald Trump in calling out the New York Times. "Our team has accomplished something very special that we are all proud of and will be for years to come".

Patriots players did not speak about Hernandez's death at the White House and team officials earlier said they would not comment. "In 2015, over 40 football staff were on the stairs".

Several members of the team will not attend the ceremony because of the man whose hand they would be shaking.

Star quarterback Tom Brady notified the White House that he was dealing with a "personal family matter" and would not attend the ceremony.

Roughly a half-dozen players had previously said they planned to skip this week's White House visit due to Trump's politics.

Fentanyl continues to drive BC overdose spike
Despite the good news here up north, the rate of fatal overdoses is still incredibly high across the rest of the province. Nearly 83 per cent of those killed so far this year are men aged 30-49 with just over half dying in private residences.

Taking their lead from the New York Times, which tweeted out a misleading photo of Wednesday's visit, detractors highlighted a tweet from Brady's wife, supermodel Gisele Bundchen.

"With your backs against the wall and the pundits, good ole pundits, boy are they wrong a lot aren't they?" said Trump. Three of whom - LeGarrette Blount, Martellus Bennet, and Devin McCourty - said their absence was an act of protest against the Trump administration.

Trump has saluted Patriots owner Bob Kraft, a longtime friend, and says the longtime coach, Bill Belichick, has "built a culture dedicated to winning".

Kraft in February complained about media attention to players' decisions to skip this year's celebration, saying it was the first time people cared. Only 27 Patriots players showed up to be honored in 2005, when George W. Bush was president, reports the Post.

Thirty-four Patriots players reportedly visited Washington D.C. on Wednesday afternoon to celebrate their improbable Super Bowl comeback victory over the Falcons in overtime.
