Pence says trade with South Korea must change

The Trump administration has signalled a more forceful USA stance toward North Korea's recent missile tests and threats, including a warning from President Trump that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has "gotta behave".

North Korea has conducted a series of ballistic missile launches in recent months in defiance of United Nation sanctions and concerns have been growing that the reclusive state could soon conduct a sixth nuclear test.

"We appreciate the challenging times in which the people of Japan live with increasing provocations from across the Sea of Japan", he after arriving in Japan with his wife and two daughters earlier in the day.

US Vice-President Mike Pence says "all options are on the table".

Pence made these comments to reporters directly following a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo where he assured leaders of the "iron-clad" alliance the West in the face of North Korea's nuclear threats.

Noting Trump's recent military actions in Syria and Afghanistan, Pence said, "North Korea would do well not to test his resolve" or the USA armed forces in the region.

The United States is aware of a higher-than-usual level of activity by Chinese bomber planes, signaling a possible heightened state of readiness, US officials told Reuters on Thursday, but downplayed concerns and left open a range of possible reasons.

"We fully comply with the government regulations".

"North Korea is a problem".

USA experts believe that only China has sufficient economic and political leverage to restrain Pyongyang's drive to develop a long-range missile capable of hitting the U.S. mainland with a nuclear warhead.

In New York, the North's deputy United Nations ambassador, Kim In Ryong, said that U.S.

Trump went on to criticize Democratic administrations.

Trump, asked on Monday if he was considering military action, told Fox News Channel he did not want to "telegraph" his plans, like the previous administration had done.

Mattis struck an even tougher tone on North Korea in an interview with reporters traveling with him to Saudi Arabia.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer said China had taken some "very helpful" steps, although it remained to be seen how effective these would be.

Pence's advisers said the vice president would make the case to Abe and Aso that the US rejection of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP, under Trump does not signal a USA withdrawal from trade and economic development in the region. "But he doesn't understand that the North Korean leaders are unpredictable and don't play by the rules", he said.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Tuesday that China was ready to work "with all relevant countries" within the framework of the UN Security Council.

At the outset of their meeting, Pence reiterated to Abe his statement in South Korea that the United States has run out of patience with Pyongyang's moves.

"I think what the president is concerned about, what countries that we've visited are concerned about are the reckless and irresponsible actions of the regime in pyongyang", Pence answered.

Pence's economic discussions in Tokyo will be closely watched to see how hard a line Washington is prepared to take on trade.

While Japan's trade surplus with the U.S.is much smaller than China's, Trump has decried the imbalance, especially in auto exports.
