Samsung's first phone with 6GB RAM launched at P27,990

Samsung's first phone with 6GB RAM launched at P27,990

Despite Galaxy Note 7 fiasco and a corruption scandal involving top brass, Samsung Electronics Co on Friday predicted that its first-quarter operating profit for this year advanced 48.2 percent on-year.

That would be its biggest Q1 profit ever, coming close to its overall profit record set in Q3 2013 and representing a almost 50 per cent increase on the same period past year when Samsung made 6.68 trillion won.

The company estimated its revenue in the first quarter this year would reach 50 trillion won, up 0.44 percent on-year.

For the unfamiliar, the sales of Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ will not be accounted in the Q1 profit results as the flagship will hit market on April 21.

Growing demand for more firepower from devices such as smartphones and servers have also helped push up margins for Samsung and its rivals in recent quarters. The company had solid sales of its budget model mobile phones, such as the Galaxy J series. Most analysts suggest that Samsung's chip and display business is continuing to perform better than expectations, they are booming, to say the least.

Watch Patriots star Rob Gronkowski interrupt the White House press breifing
The rest of the Patriots will still attend the ceremony honoring the team for its Super Bowl win, despite Hernandez's suicide. Two players were brought to speak to reporters after the White House ceremony, but both said they had not known Hernandez.

The South Korean firm's Galaxy Note 7 smartphone was plagued with problems.

Details about the successor to last year's Galaxy Note 7 are quite scarce, but some reports state that the smartphone will have 6GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage.

The performance of Samsung's Galaxy S8 premium smartphone, which goes on sale on April 21, will be the key variable for Samsung going forward. Samsung scrapped its flagship smartphones a year ago after they overheated and caught fire, leaving billions of dollars in financial damages and hurting its reputation. It led to the suspension of President Park Geun-hye for allegedly receiving bribes.

Samsung's de facto leader is due to make his first appearance at court later Friday along with four other Samsung executives who were also charged on bribery and embezzlement.
