San Jose Sharks break out in 7-0 rout of Edmonton Oilers

For the second day in a row, the Oilers had to start their practice before Game 4 of their first-round Stanley Cup playoff series in the dark and without nets. We haven't been like that all year so I think it was a one-off.

The talk entering the game focused on the lack of production from the Sharks' most talented players. "Take the game tape and throw it away".

With wires and plastic holding Couture's mouth together, the Oilers are trying to make life as uncomfortable as possible for the Sharks' alternate captain, delivering contact to his chin area whenever possible.

San Jose's power play was just 1-for-14 in the series through the first three games, after finishing 25th in the league in the regular season.

Joel Edmundson had the first goal for the Blues after winning Game 1 in overtime, Jake Allen made 23 saves, and coach Mike Yeo devised another shrewd plan against his former team.

What does it mean for San Jose if Edmonton stops taking dumb penalties?

"I don't want our players to necessarily forget about this tonight", the coach said. He has only faced 39 shots over these last two games. Jake Guentzel continues to be the story for the Penguins, notching his 5th goal of the playoffs to narrow it to a 1 goal lead late in the 3rd but they couldn't notch the equalizer.

"You know, during the decade of darkness, you have your head hung low and you're wondering when is this going to end." said Downton. "It's a matter of putting the puck in the back of the net now for us, and continuing to do those things on both sides of the puck".

The emphasis on team defence that is paying off now has been part of the Oilers philosophy since Todd McLellan took over behind the bench before the 2015-16 season. "This isn't going to be a short series", he said after the loss.

Coming off two straight shutouts by Cam Talbot and the Oilers, the San Jose Sharks needed their big names to step up in a big way and change the course of this series, and man did they ever last night at the SAP Center. Now they will try to carry that over into Game 5 in Edmonton on Thursday night.

"This is an intimidating building to play in, and it is even more when you've got a lead early", Couture said. His return gave an immediate boost in the lineup, with a first period that saw the Sharks out-shoot and out-hit the Oiler by a 2-to-1 margin, though nothing was translated to the scoreboard. And you can probably cross quite a few other things off that list, as you'd expect with the Sharks throttling Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers 7-0 in Game 4.

"You can't say enough about him right now", Talbot said.

"We had a bad night, obviously".

Couture centered the second line with Joonas Donskoi and Jannik Hansen, and Tomas Hertl played in the middle on the third line with Melker Karlsson and Timo Meier.

Brent Burns, Joe Pavelski, Logan Couture, Thornton and Patrick Marleau were the Sharks five leading scorers in the regular season.

The Oilers have scored five goals this entire series.

One of those Oilers fans is Kyla Lane, who recently underwent knee surgery and realized she wouldn't be able to fly to San Jose.

"I think he's getting more confident as this series goes on", Thornton said.
