Schumer backs Trump in dairy trade dispute with Canada

The President echoed that sentiment Thursday: "We can't let Canada or anyone else take advantage of our workers or our farmers".

Industry groups in New Zealand, Australia, the European Union, Mexico and the United States complained the new prices for Canadian milk ingredients under-cut exports to Canada.

"The facts do not bear this out".

Speaking in Kenosha, the president specifically mentioned Canada's dairy supply management system, which he called "one-sided" and one which doesn't let US farmers compete fairly.

Canada's dairy farmers agreed past year to sell milk ingredients used for cheese-making to Canadian processors, which include Saputo Inc and Parmalat Canada Inc [PLTPRC.UL] at prices competitive with worldwide rates. And again, I want to also just mention, included in there is lumber - timber - and energy.

The claims echo sentiments Mr Trump expressed this week in Wisconsin, addressing employees of Snap-on Tools at a signing for the "Buy American and Hire American" Executive order.

Justin Trudeau, Prime minister of Canada, is anxious about Trump's protectionist talk as for him relationship with U.S.is crucial.

But Canada's trade policy is having the most impact.

Canada recently changed its policy on pricing domestic milk to cover more dairy ingredients, leading to lower prices for Canadian products including ultra-filtered milk that compete with the USA product. "He is defending his domestic dairy industry", said Jacques Lefebvre, CEO of Dairy Processors Association of Canada.

UK Election Debates Won't Feature The Prime Minister
LibDem leader Tim Farron added: "The Prime Minister's attempt to dodge scrutiny shows how she holds the public in contempt". She added: "I believe in campaigns where politicians actually get out and about and meet with voters.

The ambassador told reporters in Halifax on Wednesday that earlier written appeals from New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker to the White House demanding action on the dairy file contained "factual errors" and noted the objective of his strongly-worded response was to "set the record straight".

"America's dairy farmers will continue to work with the Trump Administration, speaker Paul Ryan and other congressional leaders, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, as well as elected officials across the country to resolve this issue as soon as possible", Mulhern added.

A letter from MacNaughton rebutting American criticism of Canada's trade practices in the dairy industry was released Tuesday.

Dairy farmers say they are confident that the government has their backs, but are concerned that any potential concessions on dairy in a renegotiated NAFTA could lead to significant job losses.

"There have been no changes to Canadian regulations related to dairy imports, or changes to Canadian dairy tariffs", she said.

"If these multi-generational farm families can not find another market for their milk, they will be forced to sell their cows and go out of business", New York Agriculture Commissioner Richard Ball wrote in a letter to the U.S. Department of Agriculture last week. "As made clear in the report, Canada is not a contributor to the overproduction problem".

U.S. President Donald Trump set his sights on Canada's supply-managed dairy industry.

He said the trade balance on dairy "massively" favours the U.S.by a five-to-one margin. Canada's policy change to manipulate internal prices to export more dairy ingredients globally is of great concern to other nations beyond just the United States.
