Suspect in Facebook video murder dead

The man who posted a video of himself on Facebook killing an elderly man shot and killed himself after a "brief pursuit" by Pennsylvania State Police officers.

Steve Stephens' death marked a violent end to a almost 48-hour nationwide manhunt.

McDonald's staff tipped off police about the location of Facebook killer Steve Stephens after he ordered 20 Chicken McNuggets.

As his vehicle was spinning out of control due to the maneuver, Stephens pulled out a pistol and shot himself in the head.

Cleveland police Chief Calvin Williams says the case offers lessons on the power of social media and the harm that can be done online. Williams added that police "wanted to bring him in safely" so they could talk to him to try to understand his motives.

Zuckerberg's comments come two days after a series of videos by Steve Stephens shooting and killing of Robert Godwin Sr., 74, that was seen on Facebook Live and shared across the platform for more than two hours.

Stephens said in a separate video on Facebook on Sunday that he had already killed a dozen others. "I'm not happy what you did, but I forgive you".

The mother previously said Stephens stopped by her house on Saturday with a cryptic message.

The employee took Stephens' money and waited for him to drive up to the next window before calling the police, DuCharme said. The two last spoke Saturday night when Stephens told Lane he quit his job and was going to leave the state.

Acting on the tip, police arrived at the Erie McDonald's and spotted Stephens leaving the fast-food restaurant.

In the video, Stephens told his victim to say the name of his girlfriend, saying, "She's the reason why this is about to happen to you".

On Monday evening, Facebook announced that it was launching a review for reporting harmful content following the killing.

Stephens allegedly filmed himself committing the murder and published the video on Facebook along with another video in which he claims to have previously murdered an additional 13 people.

Authorities are offering a $50,000 reward for information that will lead to Stephen's arrest.
