UN Security Council fails to condemn North Korea's missile test

US House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan said during a visit to London the military option must be part of the pressure brought to bear.

In the same press conference, spokesman Lu Kang praised recent USA statements on the North Korean issue. We've said it as clearly as we can possibly say it. The term "reckless" is one the North Koreans have used to describe ongoing large-scale US and South Korean military exercises, which the North calls a dress rehearsal for an invasion. China's chief source of leverage is now trade, as it accounts for more than four-fifth's of North Korean global commerce.

Statements of that vein do not help the situation, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman.

North Korea's isolated totalitarian regime marked the birthday of founder Kim Il Song over the weekend with a massive military parade and an attempted missile launch, but the spectacle wouldn't have been complete without a new animated video portraying a fiery end to the United States. With South Korea and the U.S. unprepared to militarily confront the potentially nuclear-armed north, the most realistic option may be to tighten economic sanctions or hope for the downfall of the Kim dynasty, whether through Kim Jong-un's ill health or political infighting.

The Trump administration has signalled a forceful USA stance on North Korea's recent actions, dispatching Pence to the Demilitarized Zone dividing North and South Korea on Monday in a show of American resolve.

US President Donald Trump has been pressing China to rein in North Korea, suggesting that doing so could ease US-China relations over trade and other issues.

The US, meanwhile, has conducted missile defense drills with the South Korean and Japanese navies, sent its newest F-35 stealth fighters to train in South Korea, flown B-1 bombers to South Korea, and just Thursday commenced "Max Thunder", billed as the second-largest military flying exercise between US and South Korean forces.

The Pentagon has also dispatched the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson strike group to the Korean Peninsula.

Russian Federation has derailed a proposed UN Security Council statement that would have condemned North Korea's latest missile launch test, using its veto to torpedo the motion.

Little hope is held for reviving the motion against North Korea - one diplomat said it was unlikely the Security Council would be able to resolve differences on the statement. After North Korea's first nuclear test in 2006, multinational disarmament talks produced further concessions in return for closing nuclear facilities.
