Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz won't run for re-election

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), chair of the House Oversight Committee who has come under fire for brushing back calls to investigate President Donald Trump, announced on Wednesday he would not seek re-election to his seat in 2018. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Chaffetz, chairman of the House Oversight Committee and a onetime prospect for Speaker of the House, said: "My future plans are not yet finalized but I haven't ruled out the possibility of leaving early". Chaffetz says he won't for re-election or any other offi. Chaffetz's panel is investigating payments made to Michael Flynn, Trump's former national security adviser, for speaking engagements in Russian Federation and the security protocols at President Trump's Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach.

The reasons go beyond the recent questions about his role as the chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which is tasked with keeping a check on fraud and waste in the White House and the federal government.

"After more than 1,500 nights away from my home, it is time", Chaffetz wrote.

If Chaffetz runs for governor, he won't necessarily be the front-runner, Karpowitz said. Trump won the Beehive State in 2016 but voters in the largely Mormon state were less than thrilled with his brand of conservatism.

The writing was on the wall for Chaffetz after the special House elections in Kansas and Georgia. He was met by frequent, deafening boos at a February town hall as constituents grilled him on everything from investigating Trump's tax returns to Planned Parenthood.

It's possible that Chaffetz doesn't see a place for himself under the Trump administration. There's nearly no evidence that Democrats can get competitive in this deep-red district.

EPA chief delays methane rule at behest of oil and gas firms
Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt has promised a back-to-basics agenda approach for the federal agency. Pruitt has criticized the EPA for overreach and Trump's administration has taken steps to roll back environmental regulations.

Chaffetz' announcement shakes up the state's political landscape. The powerful chairman of the House Oversight Committee has repeatedly cited turning 50, growing tired of sleeping on his office cot, and his family being back in Utah.

Former independent presidential candidate Evan McMullin spoke with advisers to evaluate his options in regards to a senate run in Utah, with shot at victory suddenly seeming more likely than before.

Chaffetz already faced both Democratic and Republican challengers in the 2018 race.

On 19 April 2017, PalmerReport.com posted a story reporting the claim that the Federal Bureau of Investigations has information that the Kremlin has "kompromat", or compromising information, that could be used for blackmail, on Utah Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz.

In a statement on Facebook, Chaffetz said that the decision was a personal one and was not made out of political concerns.
