1 firefighter killed, 2 seriously hurt in San Antonio fire

One firefighter is dead after a massive 4-alarm fire at a Northwest Side shopping center Thursday night, the San Antonio Fire Department said.

Firefighters initially entered the building as a search and rescue because they did not know if people were stuck inside but when conditions worsened inside, Deem was unable to escape, Hood said at the press conference. Their conditions have not been released by the hospitals, but Hood said both were expected to be OK.

Authorities learned that one firefighter, Scott Deem, was missing and Hood said he became trapped inside.

As of 11 p.m. sources said one firefighter was possibly unaccounted for more than an hour after firefighters started fighting the blaze. More than 60 fire crews responded.

Trump decries special prosecutor probing Russian Federation links
President Donald Trump says a special prosecutor for an investigation into Russia's involvement in the election hurts our country. Richard Burr, a North Carolina Republican who chairs the Senate intelligence committee, called the appointment a "good decision".

Hood says the firefighters who were on scene were taken to a crisis intervention team. "That is not what we do, but we had the risk of losing probably an additional 15 to 20 firefighters if we did not go defensive on this fire".

A procession was held after Deem's body was placed in an ambulance to be taken to the medical examiner's office.

Since firefighters had to take a "defensive" approach in fighting the flames, fire officials say they had to make the hard decision to leave Deem behind.

"I would like to ask the citizens of San Antonio for their prayers tonight, because we're hurting", Hood said as he fought back tears.
