Abe Warns of "Specific Action" to Deter N. Korea

Abe Warns of

North Korea carried out two atomic tests a year ago, and has accelerated its missile launch programme, despite tough United Nations sanctions aimed at denying Kim the hard currency needed to fund his weapons ambitions. "The repeated provocative acts by North Korea is absolutely not acceptable", Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said in a statement.

Trump's comments came at the G7 summit in a meeting with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan, which along with South Korea is most immediately threatened by North Korean belligerence.

The main opposition Liberty Korea Party berated the North for resorting to its brinkmanship tactic despite the worldwide community's warnings.

North Korea is still thought to be several years away from its goal of being able to target United States mainland cities with a nuclear ICBM, but each new test puts it closer to success. Analysts said that test gave North Korea critical information on developing a re-entry vehicle for nuclear warheads and showed Pyongyang had a missile capable of striking the USA territory of Guam.

It comes a day after North Korean state media reported Kim had supervised the test of a new anti-aircraft system and ordered its mass production and deployment throughout the country.

It's the latest in a string of test launches as the North seeks to build nuclear-tipped ICBMs that can reach the USA mainland, a drive that puts North Korea high on the list of foreign policy worries for Japan, Washington and Seoul. North Korea fired a short-range ballistic missile that.

Three previous similar tests happened a week ago.

Because Monday's test — the North's ninth ballistic missile launch this year — was apparently of a short-range variety of which Pyongyang has a surplus of reliable missiles, it may have been meant more as a political and military message to outsiders than as a crucial test of not-yet-perfected technology.

North Korea has fired 12 missiles during nine tests so far in 2017 - this compares with 10 missile launches in the same time period in 2016.

Moon called a National Security Council meeting to discuss the North's launch. Moon says sanctions alone have failed to resolve the growing threat from the North's advancing nuclear and missile program.

The U.S. Pacific Command said in a statement it tracked a short-range missile for six minutes until it landed in the Sea of Japan. Outside analysts believe North Korea may be able to arm some of its shorter-range missiles with nuclear warheads, though the exact state of the North's secretive weapons program is unknown.

Despite the missile launches, South Korea under Moon has made tentative steps toward engaging the North by restarting stalled civilian aid and exchange programs.

North Korea traditionally relied on liquid fuel, which is relatively cheap yet corrosive and can not be stored in the missile, requiring it to accompany fuel and oxidizer trucks which makes it easier to be spotted from satellites.
