After decisive win, Macron to take over on Sunday

Worker's unions in France aren't about to let Macron forget the huge opposition against him, despite the win.

Speaking at a campaign event in Harrow, northwest London, the prime minister suggested that Mr Macron's landslide defeat of Marine Le Pen would strengthen France's hand in negotiations over Brexit.

"It's all well and good running on a ticket of cutting 120,000 public sector jobs, a 60-billion-euro cut in public spending and a lowering of the unemployment rate to 7.0 percent, (but) it will be another getting it through the French parliament", the expert said.

The lawmaker spoke in favor of attracting FN voters, taking advantage of their disappointment with Marine Le Pen's "poor performance during the campaign and presidential debates".

But Angela Merkel faces an election in September. So she needs to persuade German voters to pay out, without risking eurosceptic populism in Germany.

She welcomed his commitment to continued economic reforms and said bilateral cooperation remained a cornerstone of German foreign policy.

He will be the eighth president of the French Fifth Republic. But his arrival at the Elysée may in fact be better news than some might imagine.

Macron will name his prime minister next week, but could be forced to amend his choice if the legislative elections don't go to plan.

In 13 districts, Le Pen scored more than 55 per cent of the vote leading many to believe the party will pick up seats in those areas at a minimum.

Will Macron mean the blues or a boost for Brexit? .

The National Front (FN) candidate suffered a landslide loss in Sunday's election, scraping barely one third of votes in the second round of France's presidential election. "I look forward to working with President-elect Macron to confront the common challenges and seize the common opportunities facing our two democracies". U.S. President Donald Trump called to congratulate Macron, while on the Kremlin website, Russian President Vladimir Putin urged Macron to "overcome mutual mistrust and unite to ensure global stability and security".

Whether it's advisers like Jean Pisani-Ferry, MEPs like Sylvie Goulard, or progressive members of the stellar French civil service, they are certain to know the European Union inside out, further widening the experience divide between United Kingdom negotiators and the EU. "The growing threat of terrorism and violent extremism is accompanied by an escalation of local conflicts and the destabilisation of entire regions", Putin said in a congratulatory telegram released by the Kremlin. "In these conditions it is especially important to overcome mutual mistrust and unite efforts to ensure worldwide stability and security".
