Almodovar and Smith's comments on Netflix at Cannes

Almodovar and Smith's comments on Netflix at Cannes

Almodovar obviously sides with the festival, but his statement, read out in Spanish, English and French, was highly unusual given his leading role on the nine-member jury.

Cannes headquarters has now brought in new rules for next year's festival which will require entries to have been shown in French cinemas.

It's team of 80 photographers, videographers, editors and technicians will put in over 15,000 hours during the festival, making it one of the company's biggest annual editorial operations. To have screened the film in French cinemas after the festival as Cannes officials requested would have started that clock ticking.

Jury president Almodovar agreed with the Netflix ban, insisting films should not be considered for important prizes if they had not had a cinema release.

CANNES, France (AP) — The 70th Cannes Film Festival is opening Wednesday under sunny Cote D'Azur skies, heavy security and widespread unease in the movie industry.

Will Smith and Jessica Chastain - who are both on the jury charged with awarding the coveted Palme d'Or top prize - were among the A-listers gracing the red carpet at a glittering ceremony to launch the 12-day festival in the palm-fringed French resort.

"I have a 16-year- old and an 18-year-old and a 24-year-old at home".

Netflix has refused to release its two movies in the running for the prize in French cinemas due to strict rules that mean subscription services can not offer films for streaming until three years after their box-office release.

Doctors say India's first uterus transplant successful
According to Hindustan Times , the uterus transplant happened in the city of Pune in southwest India, on Thursday. Both the recipients and donor will be made to go through a screening before going through the procedure.

"All this does not mean that I am not open to the new technologies or to all what these technologies bring to us", he told reporters. "There's very little cross between going to the cinema and watching what they watch on Netflix in my home".

Others in the running for top honours include "Happy End", another film set against the backdrop of the migrant crisis by "Amour" director Michael Haneke, who is seeking a record-breaking third Palme d'Or. They get to see movies that aren't on a screen within 8,000 miles of them.

"I personally would not conceive not only the Palme d'Or but any other prize being given to a film and then not being able to see this film on the large screen", the veteran Spanish filmmaker told an worldwide press audience on the festival's opening day. The size should not be smaller than the chair on which you're sitting.

Smith, who has the big-budget Netflix movie Bright on the way, spoke as the voice of the streaming generation. "You must be small and humble in front of the image that's here".

Netflix allows Smith's children to "watch films they otherwise wouldn't have seen".

His children, Jaden and Willow Smith, "go to the movies twice a week and they watch Netflix".

Netflix, which streams films and television shows to subscribers, has two of the hottest movies in contention for the Palme d'Or - its first time in competition at the festival that France boasts is the greatest in the world.
