Bernie Sanders Mocks Donald Trump Over Health Care Gaffe

US President Donald Trump took to Twitter on Friday to defend remarks he had made about healthcare during a meeting with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. The White House attempted to walk back the president's comment Friday, claiming Trump had been merely looking to compliment the Australian prime minister during a bit of small talk. Trump claimed the acrimonious call with Turnbull early in his White House tenure had been "fake news". So it was amusing, but not altogether shocking, to watch Trump finish up a day where he celebrated the passage of a major healthcare reform bill by praising a healthcare system that is nearly exactly the opposite of the one proposed in his bill.

That's because Australia's health care system offers publicly funded universal health coverage for all Australians. "We have a failing health care - I shouldn't say this to our great gentleman and my friend from Australia because you have better health care than we do".

"We have a very intense engagement with the United States on these matters", Mr Turnbull said. Sanders said members of the Senate should expect similar intensity. "We need, as a nation, to reexamine the single-player plan".

Trump spoke at a gala dinner aboard the USS Intrepid in NY to commemorate the 75th anniversary of that battle.

President Donald Trump has praised Australia's single-payer health care system, describing it as superior to the USA model.

"Thank you Mr Trump for admitting that universal health care is the better way to go".

Mr Trump said he would "absolutely" visit Australia as President, with a possible window in November when a series of leadership summits are scheduled in the region, but no dates have been set.

Macron's Victory in France to Be Drawback for European Integration
Economy Commissioner Pierre Moscovici called on him to rein in the budget deficit of the Eurozone's second-biggest economy. European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker put it bluntly: "With France, we have a particular problem ..."

Experts agree that the bill fails to reach the objectives laid forth by Trump, which includes affordable coverage for everyone, lower deductibles and health care costs and better care.

That could seem apt to describe what has been a rollercoaster ride for Mr Turnbull and Mr Trump since the president took office on January 20.

He said they discussed the future of the two countries from the perspective of national security and trade to immigration and enhanced economic cooperation.

"We got a little testy, but that's OK", he later added.

Speaking at the event on board the USS Intrepid, Mr Turnbull said the "stability and prosperity of our region over so many decades has been secured - and is secured today - by the United States", a commitment he said was renewed by President Trump.

Sanders was also forced to defend Trump's decision to spend a long weekend at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, about 40 miles west of NY, his home where he spent only a few hours on Thursday night.
