Birthplace of grunge mourns 'Seattle's son' Chris Cornell

Cornell went on to play music on his own and with a new group called Audioslave.

Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell died after hanging himself, a U.S. coroner said on today.

The friend forced the hotel room and found Cornell dead in the bathroom with what was described only as "something around his neck".

A statement from the singer's publicist said his widow, Vicky Karayiannis Cornell, and the rest of the family "were shocked to learn of his sudden and unexpected passing" and thanked fans for "their continuous love and loyalty". "We are investigating it as a possible suicide but we are waiting on the medical examiner to determine the cause and manner of death", said Detroit Police Department spokesman Dan Donakowski. The band was on tour when Cornell died.

Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains were other bands to come out of the Northwestern grunge-rock scene at about the same time.

Cornell wrote and performed "You Know My Name", the theme song for Casino Royale, the first James Bond film starring Daniel Craig.

Chris Cornell died this morning at the age of 52. "In the long run, it's positive because it's not imitative, but it was negative because it wasn't unanimously accepted at the time". Soundgarden was maybe the most natural arena act of the grunge era, invoking the ghosts of their '70s predecessors with the prospect that you could be the biggest rock band in the world by being the best.

But he said in 2007 that he had been sober since checking himself into rehab in 2002.

Formed in 1984 by Cornell, guitarist Kim Thayil and bassist Hiro Yamamoto, Soundgarden released their third studio album, Badmotorfinger, in 1991, featuring popular singles including Jesus Christ Pose, Rusty Cage and Outshined.

Chris Cornell performs with Soundgarden at the 2011 Voodoo Experience. Mr. Cornell released "Scream", a 2009 solo pop-influenced album that was a collaboration with hip-hop producer Timbaland. It was a gift he put to good use with Soundgarden, as well as with Audioslave, the band he founded with members of Rage Against the Machine in the years after Soundgarden's 1997 break-up (he also sang with Temple of the Dog, an early '90s collaboration with members of Pearl Jam). But Soundgarden was truly Seattle.
