CIA sets up unit to address North Korean threat

Tension on the Korean peninsula has been high for weeks, driven by concern that North Korea might conduct its sixth nuclear test or test-launch another ballistic missile in defiance of U.N. Security Council resolutions.

In the statement, CIA Director Mike Pompeo says the creation of the center focuses the CIA's efforts against the "serious threats" emerging from North Korea, which has in recent months ramped up both nuclear and missile tests in an effort to enhance its military capabilities.

The CIA created its first single country-focused mission center, pulling together resources from a range of units to collect and analyze information on Pyongyang's nuclear weapons.

It also reflects the dynamism and agility that Central Intelligence Agency brings to evolving national security challenges, he added.

A veteran CIA operations officer has been selected as the new assistant director for Korea and presides over the mission center, the statement said without identifying the officer, adding that the team will work closely with the intelligence community and the entire USA national security community.

The U.N. Mission said the Ministry of State Security has declared that a "Korean-style anti-terrorist offensive will be commenced to mop up the intelligence and plot-breeding organizations of the USA and South Korea".

Nixon, the former analyst, said he also expects significant cooperation with South Korean intelligence services going forward.

The Republican-led House overwhelmingly voted May 4 to impose the new sanctions, which target North Korea's shipping industry and use of what the bill called "slave labor".

Pyongyang normally expresses its displeasure with Washington through statements by the Foreign Ministry or other institutions, or through representatives at its United Nations' mission in NY. "Also with the (Korean Central Intelligence Agency)". The letter stated [Hill report], "As the U.S. House of Representatives enacts more and more of these reckless hostile laws, the DPRK's efforts to strengthen nuclear deterrents will gather greater pace, beyond anyone's imagination".
