Doctors say India's first uterus transplant successful

Doctors say India's first uterus transplant successful

On Friday, May 19, the hospital will conduct another uterus transplant on a 24-year-old woman from Gujarat who suffers from Asherman's Syndrome (scar tissue in the uterus) and will also receive her mother's womb.

Later, the woman conceived normally and gave natural birth to a male child.

The team of doctors headed by Dr Shailesh Puntambekar, a cancer surgeon, is now performing the second uterine transplant at their 100-bed Pune facility.

"It is first uterine transplant in India", Dr Puntambekar said. Both the recipients and donor will be made to go through a screening before going through the procedure.

A team of 12 doctors led by Dr. Shailesh Puntambekar conducted the surgery which began at noon on Thursday and lasted for a little over nine hours at Pune's Galaxy Care Laparoscopy Institute.

However, the operation, in which the uterus was retrieved from the donor and transplanted into the recipient around 9 a.m., stretched well beyond its projected eight-hour duration. "Since they knew about the uterus transplant, they approached us and accepted the surgery option", he said.Fortunately, her mother was found to be a medicallysuitable uterus donor for her.

The Lib Dems' Tim Farron needs a 'Cleggmania' moment
Mr Farron's said that Theresa May offers a "cold, mean-spirited" Britain his visision of an "open, tolerant and united" nation. The manifesto also pledges to increase corporation tax from 19% to 20% and a penny-in-the-pound increase in income tax.

Reports indicate that only six babies so far have been born from a transplanted uterus despite there being 30 such transplants around the world.

According to Hindustan Times, the uterus transplant happened in the city of Pune in southwest India, on Thursday.

In 2013, the world's first uterus transplant was done in Sweden - where 36-year-old mother, who was born without a uterus, received a donated womb from a friend in her 60s.

All major transplantations - kidneys, liver, heart and lungs, to name a few - save lives or dramatically improve the health of the recipients.

What's equally worrying are the red flags raised about the Pune surgery by Dr Mats Brännström, who pioneered womb transplantation in Sweden in 2012 and delivered the first baby from a transplanted womb in 2014.

It remains to be seen whether India's first transplant will result in childbirth.
