EU's chief Brexit negotiator shares Irish border concern

Barnier promised to help the Republic avoid a return to a hard border with Northern Ireland after Brexit, but said the UK's departure from the European Union would have consequences for customs controls.

The tidal flow is running against them.

Speaking ahead of their Dublin trip, BCAB chairman Declan Fearon said: "It is our hope that all the political parties in Ireland will agree to a special status for the North in the Brexit negotiations".

Customs controls are part of the EU's border management, Michel Barnier warned people in Ireland.

The British Government wants a "frictionless" arrangement, to avoid a return to the borders of the past when the area was heavily militarised because of the IRA threat. The EU's Brexit negotiating guidelines promises "creative and imaginative solutions" to stop that happening.

However, the Irish Taoiseach (prime minister) disagrees, saying he believes now is not the time for a vote in his address to Barnier.

He said: 'We want these negotiations to succeed.

"I am fully aware that some member states will be more affected than others", Michel Barnier said in an address to both houses of the Irish parliament, an honour usually only reserved for visiting heads of state.

"We are in this negotiation together and a united European Union will be here for you", he said, adding that he planned to travel to meet farmers and staff at an Irish dairy cooperative close to the border.

Addressing a joint session of the two houses of the Irish parliament, Michel Barnier said a border that divides the island, and Ireland's economic and historical ties with the United Kingdom would be taken into account in the Brexit negotiations, which he will lead when they get under way later this year. The EU Parliament and figures in the Commission such as Junker have already expressed sympathy for this position and cited the continued membership of the EU through Irish citizenship as an avenue for citizens in Northern Ireland.

"The sooner this will happen, the better".

"I am ready to work and I am ready to work in total confidence and trust with the Irish Government".
