FedEx confirms it was hit by global malware attack

More than 200,000 victims in 150 countries have been registered so far, with warnings the impact could spread further on Monday.

"The growth rate of infected institutions on Monday has slowed significantly compared with the previous two days", said Chinese Internet security company Qihoo 360.

The warning was echoed by Britain's National Cyber Security Centre: "As a new working week begins it is likely, in the United Kingdom and elsewhere, that further cases of ransomware may come to light, possibly at a significant scale".

In China, "hundreds of thousands" of computers at almost 30,000 institutions and organisations were infected by late Saturday, according to Qihoo 360, one of China's largest providers of antivirus software.

There were few disruptions in the rest of Asia, including Japan, India, South Korea and Australia.

Although the virus's spread was curbed over the weekend in most of the world, France, where carmaker Renault was among the world's highest profile victims, said more attacks were likely.

But one day off you are right, sometimes you need a day off and they don't know what a day off is. This adds huge significance to the Europa League final against Ajax later this month.

"Since the global coordinated ransomware attack on thousands of private and public sector organisations across dozens of countries on Friday, there have been no sustained new attacks of that kind", the NCSC said in a statement. "Attackers update their software. other attackers will learn from the method and will carry out attacks".

He said on the sidelines of a summit in Beijing that the incident was "worrisome", but had done "no significant damage" in Russian Federation, and called for urgent global talks on countering the hackers.

The indiscriminate attack began Friday and struck banks, hospitals and government agencies, exploiting known vulnerabilities in older Microsoft computer operating systems.

Some victims were ignoring official advice and paying the $300 ransom demanded by the cybercriminals to unlock their computers, which was due to double to $600 on Monday for computers hit by Friday's first wave.

Security firm Digital Shadows said on Sunday that transactions totalling $32,000 had taken place through Bitcoin addresses used by the ransomware.

There are no indications that a particular country or organisation has been targeted, and the threat is "spreading globally", according to Europol.
