Fine Gael ministers set to bid to succeed Enda Kenny

Fine Gael ministers set to bid to succeed Enda Kenny

"I hope now Leo goes on to win this Fine Gael contest and help lead our country after the enormous progress of this Government over the past six years". He was due to step down at midnight to become acting party leader until a successor is chosen. Minister Michael Creed may be a cause for concern in the Coveney camp, but it is believed that he will end up backing his Cork colleague, while Cork South West TD Jim Daly is expected to break ranks and back Mr Varadkar.

"Most importantly I want to take the country forward".

He said he wanted a new social contract and everyone should have equal opportunity.

As to the future Cllr Mulhall said the party has "two good candidates" in Leo Varadkar and Simon Coveney and there was talk of a third candidate.

Mr Donohoe stated his intention to vote for Mr Varadkar in an interview on RTÉ's Morning Ireland.

Dubliner Varadkar is now the clear favourite with the bookies to succeed Enda Kenny as Fine Gael boss, though political sources say it is way too early to call.

Sturgeon Claims Independent Scotland Will Rejoin EU in Stages, Without Euro
The SNP candidate for Angus has been challenged by his Conservative opponent over his stance on a post-Brexit fishing industry. Ms Sturgeon said: "My position is I want Scotland to be in the EU". "I think the people of Angus deserve some clarity".

Two candidates have so far declared an interest in becoming the next party leader and, by default, the next prime minister for the remainder of what is widely considered to be a fragile, minority government.

Mr Donohoe said it is a matter for the next taoiseach whether he would have a Cabinet role, refusing to say whether he would seek the role of Minister for Finance. He understands, as he said last week, the unique circumstances of Donegal, cut off from the rest of the North for most of the last century by partition, and cut off geographically and in other ways from the rest of the State.

He had previously said he wouldn't lead the party into the. He has a very tough job at the moment as Minister for Housing.

Mr Varadkar is expected to formally launch his campaign for the Fine Gael leadership on Saturday.

Currently, a party leadership contest has officially begun.

Prime minister since 2011 and leader of his party for nearly 15 years, Kenny is expected to be replaced by either Social Protection Minister Leo Varadkar, 38, the bookmakers' favorite, or Housing Minister Simon Coveney, 44.
