French President Vows To Be 'Demanding' With Putin In Versailles Talks

Putin said: "They wanted to do like in France, but a bit better".

The atmosphere between the two men was cordial and relaxed.

The announce was made during a joint press briefing of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron after meeting in Versailles, France.

On Sputnik and Russia Today, Macron showed little restraint, saying the two organizations spread "untruths about me and my campaign" during the French election. Russian meddling became a concern in France after allegations that Russia sought to interfere in the USA presidential contest that elected Donald Trump and after a document leak hit Macron's campaign in the final hours of the French race.

Ignatchenko also added that Macron's decision to engage in dialogue with Russian Federation and to positively respond to proposals brought forward by Moscow stems from the fact that this is what the majority of French people want.

Macron said any use of chemical weapons in Syria - where Russian Federation is propping up the government of President Bashar Assad - is a "red line" for France and would be met by "reprisals" and an "immediate riposte" from France.

Putin also offered Macron's far-right opponent Marine Le Pen a publicity coup when he granted her an audience a month before the election's first round.

Putin described Le Pen as a politician who wants to develop friendly ties with Russian Federation and said it would have been odd to rebuff her overtures. Syria has the backing of Russian Federation.

He says the meeting with Le Pen didn't represent an attempt to sway the race.

Macron's full-on blast at the state news agency Sputnik and broadcaster Russia Today came at a news conference with Putin standing at his side.

"I would evaluate the results of this meeting with cautious optimism, as the presidents were able to find common ground, issues that will help forge further dialogue", Timofeyev said. Later, Macron said he had a "frank exchange" in their first ever face to face meeting.

Lavrov said the allegations "reflected the well-known inertia of the anti-Russian campaign" as ties with the West slumped after Moscow's seizure of Crimea from Ukraine.

On Syria, Mr Putin underlined the importance of securing the Syrian state, adding that it is essential for combating terrorism.

Russian Federation has staunchly backed Syrian President Bashar Assad throughout the conflict, while France has pushed for Assad's removal from office.

Macron is the first Western leader to speak to Putin after the Group of Seven summit over the weekend, where relations with Russian Federation were a key topic.

Any use of chemical weapons in Syria is a "red line" for France and would be met by "reprisals" and an "immediate riposte" from the government, Macron said.

He said that any use of such weapons in Syria would lead to "reprisals" from France - without specifying exactly what form they would take.

Macron also brought up LGBT rights in Chechnya, saying he would be "constantly vigilant on these issues".

Talk about making a statement.

French President Emmanuel Macron has warned that France would respond immediately to any use of chemical weapons in Syria, while urging a closer partnership with Russian Federation in fighting the Islamic State in the country.

The news conference was held in the palace's largest room, the Gallery of Great Battles, which celebrates 14 centuries of French military successes.
