Fresh horses await Derby winner Always Dreaming in Preakness

As might be expected from two successful guys from the neighborhood, he and Viola reveled in Always Dreaming's win together.

Always Dreaming, ridden by John Velazquez, finishes first in the 143rd Kentucky Derby at Louisville's Churchill Downs.

Always Dreaming's primary ownership is comprised of Bonomo's Brooklyn Boyz Stables and Teresa Viola, whose husband Vincent owns the NHL's Florida Panthers.

Always Dreaming, impressive victor of the Kentucky Derby (G1), is headed to historic Pimlico Race Course for the Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown, the 142 Preakness Stakes (G1) Saturday, May 20.

"He's really got some spring in his step this morning", Pletcher said. "But I did have in my mind that if Always Dreaming were to be good enough to win the Derby, we'd want to go to Pimlico".

"At Pimlico, there's generally not a lot of horses training there", he said. "I think it will be a quiet environment and give him time to settle in and if we need to make any adjustments we'll have time to do that".

The dark brown colt then fulfilled a dream come true for a multitude of people by winning the marquee race going away on Saturday.

Classic Empire, the Breeders' Cup Juvenile victor and 2-year-old champion, was made the 4-1 morning-line favorite after overcoming injuries to emphatically win the Arkansas Derby in April.

The field for the second leg of the Triple Crown is capped at 14 - six fewer than the Derby.

Classic Empire, the Arkansas Derby victor, encountered a horrific journey Saturday but still managed to nab a fourth-place finish that has encouraged trainer Mark Casse to seriously consider a Preakness run. If an issue with fourth-place Classic Empire's right eye clears up, he could join them.

Southern California-based Royal Mo, who didn't get into the Derby, will run in the Preakness.

Gunnevera, who finished seventh following a rough trip, is a possibility, pending a meeting between trainer Antonio Sano and the Fountain of Youth winner's owners.

Other possible new shooters include Illinois Derby victor Multiplier, Cloud Computing, Conquest Mo Money and Lancaster Bomber from the barn of Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien.
