Google announces new standalone VR headsets, WorldSense platform

Google chose to partner with HTC and Lenovo to create a new Vive standalone VR headset that will be the first to use Google's Daydream platform. For this new project, Google has teamed with HTC Vive and Lenovo to tackle one of VR adoption's largest issues.

This time past year, Google introduced Daydream, a VR platform for Android devices that was built right into Android Nougat and supported by Google's own viewer hardware, the Daydream View.

WorldSense also builds on Google's Tango technology for augmented reality, which allows devices to track motion and understand distances and their position. This enables positional tracking, meaning the headset tracks the user's movements in space without the need for external sensors. It's also not the first time Google has delved into head-worn standalone computer systems, having issued a limited launch of its Google Glass wearable some years prior. All that set-up can be a pain, but this new venture hopes to get you into VR with a press of a button. Everything required to deliver a smooth and immersive VR experience will be integrated within the headset. The hardware is fully optimized for VR, and features a new headset tracking technology called WorldSense. The technology uses several sensors included in the device to make the virtual experience match the real world, as much as it can.

SIA loses $138m in Q4, full-year profit halved
Passenger flown revenue declined $382m (-3.2%) despite traffic growth (+2.6%) as yields continued to come under intense pressure. The move is not expected to have a material impact on its financial performance in the 2017/18 financial year, the airline said.

There's a lot to like here, even if the hardware might not come close to being able to produce the same visual fidelity as something like an Oculus Rift of HTC Vive.

While LG won't be retrofitting the G6 with Daydream support, they look to have committed to including it in their upcoming V30 (due in late 2017). Google is also adding a cast option so that you can mirror the VR screen on a television so your friends and family can see what you're seeing.

According to Lenovo, the VR experiences will be available soon, but developers are still working to unlock features “most consumers have never experienced before.”.
