Google I/O 2017: highlights from the developer conference

Oh, and Google Assistant will be available on iOS.

In fact during the announcement Google has deemed the new Android O to be more useful, deliver Fluid Experiences which will include features like Picture-in-picture, Notification Dots, Autofill with Google, and Smart Text Selection.

"Users can save time and headache by using credit and debit cards they've already saved to their Google Account whenever they see the option to pay with Google on supported apps or sites". It can also recognize things like flower species and other objects.

The biggest benefit, according to many, is that if users point Lens at Wi-Fi login credentials, the Android phone will log into that network.

In I/O 2016, Google announced Daydream platform for Virtual Reality (VR) devices and also launched Daydream View headgear, which needs a top-end phone to function. So Google has now announced support for a different programming language called the Kotlin. And if all your appliances are running Google Assistant, and one breaks, you're not going to buy an Alexa-powered one to replace it. Google has come up with Google Assistant, Google Home, Google photos. It should give Siri a run for its money, but the fact you'll probably need to open an app rather than hold the home button will make it less convenient. Google is said to be designing apps like YouTube Go, and a new version of Chrome that will be easy on mobile data - an optimisation that will be of particular interest to users in rural areas of the country where high-speed mobile data penetration still remains low. However, Google is finally working on it, and emojis are no longer blobs, but improved, round faces like how normal emojis are meant to be. There will also be a simple version of the play store created but it will still contain the whole app catalog.

Through machine learning, the feature will detect apps that behave unusually and remove them from the device. That number is expected to increase significantly if Google continues its current development.

All of this is a reminder, once again, that Google's importance for the music industry goes well beyond its licensed music services and the arguments about safe harbour and the "value gap".

During a two hour keynote presentation at its I/O developer conference, Alphabet Inc.'s Google showed off its prowess in the technology world's hottest field: artificial intelligence. It will be made available first to Nexus and Pixel devices.
