Indian PM on climate: would be 'crime' to spoil environment

After returning to the USA from his first global trip, President Donald Trump said the relationship between Germany and the U.S is " very bad" and "will change".

But after her grueling meeting with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and attending the G7 Summit, Angela Merkel said she realized that they have to acknowledge the new reality - that Germany's future rests more with the members of the European Union.

Trump also reportedly described German trade practices as "bad, very bad", in Brussels talks last week, complaining that Europe's largest economy sells too many cars to the US.

After recent summits, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said May 28 that Europe must take its fate into its own hands.

While six of the seven G7 nations agreed to stick with their commitment to implement the 2015 Paris Agreement that aims to slow global warming, Mr Trump said he needed more time to decide if the USA would abandon the accord.

Trump is "wide open" on whether to continue United States support for the Paris climate accord, Defence Secretary James Mattis said in an interview aired on Sunday.

Tension between Berlin and Washington reached new levels Monday after German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel accused the Trump administration of standing "against the interests of the European Union".

Her foreign minister, a political rival, upped the rhetoric Monday by declaring that with Trump's policies, "the West has become smaller".

Defiant Arsene Wenger confident Arsenal's FA Cup triumph has silenced the doubters
Cesc Fabregas found himself on the bench during the FA Cup final between Chelsea and Arsenal in which his side lost by 2-1. But it is the losers who still head in the offseason the most buoyant.

US-German relations have also come under strain by Trump's repeated criticism of the trade deficit and his threat to impose a hefty tax on German carmakers for selling vehicles in the US market that were produced elsewhere.

Trump expressed his views on U.S.

Trump made the comments to EU Commissioner Jean-Claude Juncker and European Council president Donald Tusk, according to German news magazine Der Spiegel.

Her strong comments were a further indication that Mr. Trump's trip did not go down well with influential European leaders and that it seems, at least from the Continent's perspective, to have increased trans-Atlantic strains rather than diminish them.

Merkel praised India for implementing that climate pact very "intensively and in a very committed way" and Modi said people had no right to ruin the environment for future generations.

"The times when we could fully rely on others are somewhat in the past", said Merkel while speaking on the campaign trail in Munich.

Setting a road map for the bilateral strategic ties, India and Germany today started the fourth round of the biannual Inter-Governmental Consultations (IGC) here headed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. "We discussed new and upcoming opportunities and challenges in Asia, Europe and the world", he added.

Trump launched a salvo against German auto exports to the United States last week, saying that "the Germans are bad, very bad" during a meeting with senior European officials in Brussels, the German weekly Der Spiegel reported.
