Kim Jong-un Claims New Missile Can Reach Mainland US

North Korea is banned from any rocket launch by the United Nations but it ignores that.

According to state news agency KCNA, North Korea tested a Hwasong-12 missile Sunday which reached an altitude of 2,111.5 kilometres (1,312 miles) and flew 787 kilometers (489 miles).

The missile would have flown about 4,500 kilometers at maximum trajectory, he wrote.

Haley said on ABC's "This Week" that the test appeared to be meant to send a message to South Korea and that North Korea's missile program was "getting kind of close to home" for Russian Federation.

After years of missile tests by North Korea that have come as part of the nation's effort to build an intercontinental ballistic missile that could launch a nuclear warhead, this latest test is garnering much attention by those watching North Korea for major signs of advancement.

North Korea on Monday boasted of a successful weekend launch of a new type of "medium long-range" ballistic rocket that can carry a heavy nuclear warhead.

Calling the DPRK "a nuclear power with a powerful potential of military deterrence", Kim Jong-un stressed that Pyongyang was ready to respond should the United States dare to carry out a military provocation against the country.

Tensions between the two reached a peak in recent weeks, with Washington saying military action was an option under consideration and Pyongyang issuing threats of its own.

At a media briefing at its embassy in Beijing, North Korea's ambassador to China said the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency and South Korean National Intelligence Service conspired "secretly and meticulously" in hatching their plot to use "radioactive or nano-poisonous substances" to assassinate Kim.

Aside from space launches, Jeffrey Lewis of the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in the U.S. told AFP: "This is the longest range missile North Korea has ever tested".

He urged other world leaders to "stop intimidating North Korea and find a peaceful solution to the problem".

Pyongyang says it needs atomic weapons to defend itself against the threat of invasion.

"The test-fire proved to the full all the technical specifications of the rocket. like guidance and stabilization systems. and reconfirmed the reliability of new rocket engine under the practical flight circumstances", KCNA said.

It was "plausible that they have made a compact warhead after five nuclear tests", Hanham told AFP, but KCNA's phrasing was "interesting but vague".

Symantec and Kaspersky Lab said on Monday some code in an earlier version of the WannaCry software had also appeared in programmes used by the Lazarus Group, which researchers from many companies have identified as a North Korea-run hacking operation.

She said it was time to "send a strong, unified message that this is unacceptable, and I think you'll see the global community do that".

The U.N. Security Council will hold closed consultations about the launch on Tuesday afternoon, according to the U.N. Mission for Uruguay, which holds the council presidency this month.
