Koeman not confident Barkley will sign new Everton contract

Everton boss Ronald Koeman has admitted that he is not confident that Ross Barkley will still be at the club next season.

The board has been working to try to get Barkley re-signed, and the England worldwide was told last week by Koeman that he had until the end of this season to make a decision on his future, with the Dutchman saying at the time: "Either he accepts the contract or we sell the player".

Everton are setting their sights on transfer window targets as they gear up to meet the demands of European football next season, manager Ronald Koeman said on Friday.

When asked whether he was confident that Barkley would resign, Koeman said: 'No because he is a long time thinking about the future. "I think Manchester City will try and sign stronger and maybe better players - players who have won things over the years". We are already trying to get players in for next season in the front positions.

'I spoke to the player. I don't know what will happen after it.

'If you offer a player a new contract, and a good contract, that means you want to keep the player.

The Dutchman will know that there are plenty of other good options on the market, and it is down to him to select the best of those. If we can do our business this summer, the team will be really strong for the next season.

Koeman also gave his thoughts on striker Romelu Lukaku's bid to win the Premier League Golden Boot. Next weekend we need an answer. But that's what we work on.
