Macron: France's youngest president faces divided nation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken to Emmanuel Macron, congratulating him on the victory in French Presidential election.

"Called President Emmanuel Macron to convey my congratulations on his victory in the French Presidential election", PM said in a twitter message.

Final results from the French presidential election show that victor Emmanuel Macron received 10 million more votes than far-right rival Marine Le Pen.

President Kiska is looking forward to cooperating with Marcon and deepening what he described as "traditionally excellent and intense" relations between Slovakia and France.

Even though Macron had never ran for or held elected office before, his victory has made him the youngest President of France's Fifth Republic so far.

Still, despite his extra-ordinary margin of victory, Macron knows the forces he will have to face-off during his term as president are tremendous.

In a pointed endorsement of European unity, Macron strode to the stage at his raucous victory party in the grand central courtyard of Paris's Louvre Museum on Sunday night to the strains of Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" theme, the European Union's anthem.

"Don't boo! I will do everything to ensure they don't feel the need to vote for extremes", France's new President-elect vowed.

The result wasn't close - Macron had 64 per cent support with about 90 per cent of votes counted.

In early returns, Macron had won an estimated 65 percent of the vote to Le Pen's almost 35 percent, according to the French Interior Ministry.

The president walked beside the 39-year-old Macron to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the monument, where they laid a wreath.

"Will the Macron-Le Pen divide - which is a national, existential identity divide, not the usual left-right split - continue into the legislative election?"

Anti-capitalist candidate Melenchon - who won seven million votes in the April 23 first round - is also angling for the consolation prize of opposition leader.

Trump had tweeted that Le Pen could benefit from the security fears in France over intermittent terrorist attacks. He had said a deadly attack against a police officer in the Champs-Elysee in Paris would have a "big effect" on the presidential election and praised Le Pen, calling her "the strongest on what has been going on in France".

Macron has lamented France's failure to solve its unemployment problem. "However, Le Pen's still strong showing shows how Macron has just five years to turn France around".

The news agency, AFP, reported that prosecutors had launched an investigation.

Turnout was expected to slightly down on previous polls, as many voters found the choice between Mr. Macron's pro-business, socially liberal programme and Ms. Le Pen's hardline anti-EU, anti-immigration stance unpalatable.

The 39-year-old must unite a deeply-divided country, roll back unemployment and try to nudge a fractious European Union along the path of reform - but he first faces a battle to secure a governing majority in legislative elections due next month.
