Macron To Visit Merkel In First Foreign Trip As French President

The demonstrators were protesting both against Macron - criticized by many on France's far left as a member of a discredited elite in thrall to global capitalism - and against his defeated far-right nationalist rival, Marine Le Pen.

Since the first round of the election, Macron has accused Russia of meddling in his campaign with cyberattacks and has refused to accredit Russian media outlets RT and Sputnik, accusing them of issuing fake news stories.

Macron's most immediate battle is likely securing a parliamentary majority in upcoming legislative elections in June.

Macron has proposed cuts to France's heavy burden of state spending and wants to loosen the rigid labour laws that many believe push up joblessness and hobble investment.

Le Pen offered a radically different vision, proposing to pull France out of the euro, hold a referendum on European Union membership, and impose protectionist trade policies to shield French workers from what she called "savage globalization".

The parliamentary elections are scheduled for June 11 and 18.

The Prime Minister, who also sent a telegram of congratulations to Macron, stressed that Europe will need stability and constructive cooperation following Brexit, with France's role in this situation being irreplaceable.

State Dept expresses "concern" over Turkish officials' attack on protesters
The statement said that the US communicated its concerns to the Turkish government "in the strongest possible terms". They "began aggressively provoking Turkish-American citizens who had peacefully assembled to greet the President".

Those were perhaps hard words for a man who has watched Mr Macron's success at the expense of the political humiliation of his own Socialist Party.

Mr Wahnicht described the hard exercise of synthesis that awaits the president-elect: "He must have socialist MPs in his parliamentary majority with a right-wing prime minister". Others, however, see him as little more than the newest version of establishment politics and the heir to Hollande's unpopular presidency. Many voters backed him reluctantly, simply to keep out Le Pen's extremism. Announcing the changes, the movement's secretary general, Richard Ferrand, said the organization will be "a new political force" on the landscape redrawn by Macron's victory.

En Marche's 577 candidates will be announced by Thursday. U.S. President Donald Trump called to congratulate Macron, while on the Kremlin website, Russian President Vladimir Putin urged Macron to "overcome mutual mistrust and unite to ensure global stability and security".

Le Pen expressed regret that the French people had voted for "continuity", but she has her sights set firmly on the future - particularly in light of gains that Le Pen dubbed a "historic result" for the National Front.

Market reaction Monday to Macron's victory was subdued: investors were expecting it and seem wary of the difficulties he faces.

France's CAC 40 index, which last week touched the highest level since early 2008, slipped 1 percent on Monday.

The euro fell from six-month highs against the dollar on confirmation of Macron's widely expected victory by a margin of 66 percent to 34 percent.
