Macron's Victory in France to Be Drawback for European Integration

Macron's Victory in France to Be Drawback for European Integration

Incoming French president Emmanuel Macron was starting to build his centrist government today, with his former Socialist boss jockeying for position in a radically changed political landscape.

A youngish political novice with a background in investment banking and a brand-new political party hardly sounds like someone likely to do well at the polls, but 39-year-old Emmanuel Macron is headed to a five-year term as the next president of France, having won an astonishing 66 percent of the vote Sunday.

The Socialists are torn between the radical left of their defeated candidate Benoit Hamon and the more centrist, pro-business branch led by Manuel Valls, who was prime minister under Hollande.

On the financial front, European stock markets edged down in early trading as investors had been widely expecting Mr Macron's victory.

The man who will formally become France's youngest president on Sunday has never held elected office. Tuesday's offer by Valls to stand for En Marche in the two-stage legislative elections in June is the first high-profile defection since Macron's election win and could be a boost for him. The candidates will be announced by Thursday.

France remains in a state of emergency courtesy of terrorism, the economy is stagnant and the battle now is between the Macron "globalists" and the Le Pen "patriots".

Republicans grandee Alain Juppe said the party should not adopt a policy of "systematic obstruction" of Macron if it failed to win a majority. Macron is working to obtain a majority in the lower house of parliament in June elections.

One of Macron's first acts will be to name a prime minister - a choice that will show whether he leans more to the left or the right.

Despite her defeat, the results also made record for Le Pen's far-right National Front (FN) party.

Sylvie Goulard, a French deputy to the European Parliament, said Mr Macron would make Berlin his first official visit, with perhaps a stop to see French troops stationed overseas as well.

The French interior ministry said that with 93% of the votes counted, Macron had about 19.3 million votes, while Le Pen secured about 10.4 million.

Economy Commissioner Pierre Moscovici called on him to rein in the budget deficit of the Eurozone's second-biggest economy.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker put it bluntly: "With France, we have a particular problem ..."
