Man who allegedly drove car through Times Square charged with murder

At least one person has died and almost two dozen were hurt when a wrong-way driver slammed into a crowd of pedestrians in Times Square Thursday, senior officials familiar with the investigation tell NBC 4 NY. Pandemonium erupted when the vehicle barreled through the prime tourist location and slammed into a security barrier, coming to rest with two of its wheels in the air.

Police tested Rojas for drugs and alcohol after taking him into custody. Law enforcement sources told ABC News initial tests have come back negative for alcohol but positive for drugs.

ABC News cited unidentified police sources as saying Rojas had apparently been high on synthetic marijuana.

During this time, he had told police he was being harassed and followed. -Police believe Rojas might be suffering from a psychological disorder. -Authorities say Rojas was under the influence and could have been hallucinating. -Rojas' most recent arrest was for menacing in the Bronx. Rojas was charged with misdemeanour battery and resisting an officer without violence, but it was unclear how the case was resolved. Rojas is a USA citizen and served in the Navy from 2011 to 2014, most recently at Naval Air Station Jacksonville in Florida. It happened just before noon near 44th Street and Seventh Avenue - the heart of Times Square near Broadway.

Six months ago the city completed a $55 million, almost six-year renovation of Times Square that turned roadways into pedestrian zones.

Brooklyn resident Asa (AY-suh) Lowe was standing outside the Levi's store enjoying the weather when he heard screaming around midday Thursday. He turned around and saw the vehicle hitting people on the sidewalk. He reportedly tried to flee in the chaotic aftermath, but a group of witnesses were able to hold him down until police arrived; video from the scene shows him being led into a patrol auto by several officers. Rojas' friends have been questioned by authorities and they said that when they saw him earlier this week, he appeared cheerful.
