Movie filmed in Cincinnati up for highest award at Cannes

Movie filmed in Cincinnati up for highest award at Cannes

The jury president of this year's Cannes Film Festival has announced he will only award cinema-released movies, which would exclude Netflix productions.

Regarding the controversy over its limited screenings in theaters, which has brought about criticisms from the cinema industry, Sarandos said that Netflix is "not against movie theaters" and does not "mean to harm movie theaters", but rather, wishes to coexist with them. "The festival asked Netflix in vain to accept that these two films could reach the audience of French movie theatres and not only its subscribers".

The Festival de Cannes is aware of the anxiety aroused by the absence of the release in theaters of those films in France. Festival organisers tried to negotiate a compromise, with a "limited release" of the movies in France mooted.

The gathering on the southern French coast, where 19 films will be vying for the coveted Palme d'Or top prize and hundreds more will be screened, also comes with a higher security status than in previous years. Notably, as Variety reported in 2015, four USA movie theater chains refused to screen Cary Fukunaga's Beasts of No Nation because the film was to be released in theaters and on Netflix simultaneously, rather than abiding by the traditional 90-day delay for home debut. Beginning next year, the festival will only admit films in competition that have French theatrical releases, which the Netflix films so far do not.

Farrell, who was nominated for a Golden Globe in Yorgos Lanthimos' 2015 quirky film, The Lobster, also co-stars with Kidman in The Beguiled as a wounded Union soldier taken in during the Civil War by a boarding school of sheltered Virginia schoolgirls.

Todd Haynes, director of acclaimed lesbian drama "Carol", has the first film in the main competition, "Wonderstruck", based on a half-text, half-graphic novel about the inter-connected stories of two troubled children, set decades apart. On Wednesday, director Pedro Almodóvar, who's presiding over this year's competition jury, made a controversial statement regarding the inclusion of Netflix films in the festival. "You must feel small and humble in front of the image that is here to capture you".

"I was able to work on the movie thanks to Netflix". And now they get to find those artists and they get to look them up online and they make contact. American independentsFour titles from USA has been selected for the competition with, needless to say, neither the political authorities nor the film studios having a chance to influence the selection done by the artistic director of the festival, Thierry Fremaux. And there's other films that they prefer to watch at home. He added that "Okja" was an "amazing film that theatre chains want to block us from entering into Cannes film festival competition".
