An estimated 1 in 4 families in the United States has a member with mental illness, and as many as 14,860 residents of Hancock County could be diagnosed with serious brain disorders in their lifetime, NAMI reports. They also include anxiety disorders such as obsessive compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.

The Alliance defines mental illness as conditions that affect a person's thinking, feelings or mood, which may affect the ability to relate to others and function each day. Parents and students should learn how to recognize the warning signs of mental health conditions and to act.
