Sweden drops rape investigation into WikiLeaks head Julian Assange

Swedish prosecutors on Friday dropped a rape investigation into WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange after seven years, NBC News reported.

Assange took refuge in Ecuador's embassy in London in 2012 to escape extradition to Sweden to answer questions about sex-crime allegations from two women. Assange, 45, believes the United States wants him extradited and arrested in connection with WikiLeaks' publication of classified USA documents.

"Director of Public Prosecution, Marianne Ny, has today chose to discontinue the investigation regarding suspected rape by Julian Assange", the prosecutor's office said in a statement.

"The decision to discontinue the preliminary investigation is not because we have been able to make a full assessment of the evidence in this case, but because we did not see any possibilities to advance the investigation forward", Public Prosecution Director Marianne Ny said in a televised press conference.

Sweden has revoked a European Arrest Warrant for Assange, so British police are no longer seeking him for extradition. "Westminster Magistrates' Court issued a warrant for the arrest of Julian Assange following him failing to surrender to the court on the 29 June 2012", the police said. British police said before the announcement that Assange is still wanted in Britain for jumping bail. He is now free to leave the embassy when he wants.

Julian Assange's Swedish lawyer Per E. Samuelson says it is a "day of victory" for the WikiLeaks founder after Sweden's top prosecutor dropped an investigation into a rape claim against him.

Although Sweden has withdrawn its request for a European arrest warrant, The Guardian reports that Ny maintained the probe could be reopened if he returns to Sweden before 2020, a date set by statute of limitations.

It went on: "Now that the situation has changed and the Swedish authorities have discontinued their investigation into that matter, Mr Assange remains wanted for a much less serious offence". He was on bail when he arrived at the Ecuador Embassy in Central London nearly five years ago.

Manchester United offer worst value for money in the league
He said: "Maybe the players don't believe me, but what I like the most is to try to help them". In the League Cup, City was eliminated by its rival Manchester United, led by Jose Mourinho.

The Australian national has previously expressed concern that he could end up being extradited and facing the death penalty in the United States over allegations of revealing government secrets through his site, WikiLeaks.

Britain's Crown Prosecution Service said that breach of bail is punishable by up to a year in prison or a fine. We have won the Assange case. "Focus now moves to United Kingdom", the group tweeted.

"Given that the European Arrest Warrant no longer holds, Ecuador will now be intensifying its diplomatic efforts with the United Kingdom so that Julian Assange can gain safe passage in order to enjoy his asylum in Ecuador".

He argues that the sex was consensual and has denounced the accusations as "politically motived".

Both U.S. and British officials have declined to comment on whether there is a warrant for Assange's arrest.

Police kept up round-the-clock guard outside the embassy until December 2015, when the operation was scaled back, in part because of the cost, which had exceeded 11 million pounds (over $17.5 million at the time).

Officials said in a statement that, under Swedish law, investigations must be completed as quickly as possible and must be dropped "when a prosecutor has exhausted the possibilities".
