Trump firing Comey amounts to 'high crimes', says Harvard constitutional law professor

President Donald Trump is considering almost a dozen candidates to succeed ousted FBI Director James Comey, choosing from a group that includes several lawmakers, attorneys and law enforcement officials.

"James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!" fumed the president, whose dismissal of the Federal Bureau of Investigation director on Tuesday has triggered days of turmoil in Washington.

Comey's firing is one of three causalities of personnel investigating the Trump administration, including former acting attorney general Sally Yates and Preet Bharara, U.S. attorney for the southern district of NY, who was investigating Fox News and would likely have been involved in Trump's unsubstantiated claims that Obama wiretapped Trump Tower at the time of his termination.

President Trump was given letters by his Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Mr Sessions' deputy, Rod J Rosenstein, outlining what they saw as failures in Mr Comey's time in office.

Comey hasn't commented publicly since he was dismissed.

"Or, much more likely, Comey's account is true in which Comey gave him no assurances and said, 'You can count on me to be honest, but not to be reliable or swear fealty to you'".

"Even that is possible", Trump said.

White House spokespeople later refused to say whether the president's conversations were in fact being secretly taped. Comey found the allegations confounding, according to his associate, and wondered what to make of what he described as odd thoughts coming from his new boss.

The next director will immediately be confronted with oversight of an FBI investigation into possible coordination between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign, an inquiry the bureau's acting head, Andrew McCabe, has called "highly significant". "He said, 'You are not under investigation.'" Trump told Holt.

Tim Cook spotted testing Apple's glucose monitor
Still, there was no word from CNBC's sources on whether Apple might release a glucose tracker and when that could happen. Smith said developing such a device has been "the most hard technical challenge I have encountered in my career".

That's far different that the White House's initial account in the hours after Comey's firing.

"In fact, when I chose to just do it, I said to myself, I said, 'You know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made-up story; it's an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should have won, '" Trump said.

"I was going to fire Comey", Trump said.

Recently, former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates testified she'd personally told White House officials that Flynn could be compromised by Russian blackmail.

The White House has consistently denied having links with Russian Federation.

The House Intelligence Committee's investigation of Russian meddling was already tainted by the actions of its chairman, who appeared to be carrying water for the president.

A Duke-educated lawyer, McCabe was named previous year as the FBI's deputy director, the No. 2 position in the bureau, overseeing significant investigations and operations. He promised he would tolerate no interference from the White House and would not provide the administration with updates on its progress.

Pearson and Lemire reported from NY.
