Trump says he gave Russians the super secret information aides denied yesterday

He recently threatened to cancel daily White House press briefings "and hand out written responses for the sake of accuracy".

"We're really dependent on getting information-sharing analysis, comparing notes with our partners and allies - it's a source of strength and support from the United States", said Richard Nephew, a former National Security Council and State Department official who's now at Columbia University.

"If the U.S. administration considers it possible, we are ready to submit a transcript of Lavrov's talk with Trump to the U.S. Senate and Congress, if, of course, the U.S. administration would want this", Putin said, according to the Russian-owned Tass news agency.

Donald Trump has been accused of sharing "highly classified" information with the Russian foreign minister and the country's ambassador here during a White House meeting but the defiant US President asserted on Tuesday that he had "absolute right" to share facts with Moscow.

McMaster said his real concern was not what information the president shared, but the source of the leaks. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, "and they've got to figure out a way to come to grips with all that's happening". Following a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Trump said only that his meeting last week with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was "very, very successful".

But top White House officials were evidently aware that the disclosure might constitute a misstep.

The revelations drew strong condemnation from Democrats and a rare rebuke of Trump from some Republican lawmakers.

However, he has been accused of acting unwisely and jeopardising long-standing intelligence-sharing agreements by sharing information without consulting the ally that provided it.

Ron Dermer, Israel's ambassador to the United States, also did not comment directly on the report.

And Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the ministry, left a dismissive post about the report on her Facebook page. He continued, in a statement on Tuesday: "Reports that this information was provided by a USA ally and shared without its knowledge sends a troubling signal to America's allies and partners around the world and may impair their willingness to share intelligence with us in the future".

But other nations appeared to be reconsidering.

Trump, "in no way compromised any sources or methods", McMaster said when asked directly whether Trump shared classified information with the Russians. Such sharing "could be a risk for our sources", the official said. "The President only discussed the common threats that both countries faced", said Dina Powell, Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategy, who also attended the meeting.

After he spoke with the Russians, Trump was informed that he had broken protocol and White House officials placed calls to the National Security Agency and the CIA looking to minimize any damage.

The New York Times was first to report Israel was an intelligence source.

But then Trump seemingly admitted sharing information, tweeting Tuesday: "As President I wanted to share with Russian Federation. which I have the absolute right to do".

McMaster did not deny that Trump discussed classified information but would not go into detail about what aspects of the conversation were classified.
