U.S. summons Turkey envoy for embassy brawl

In a statement, the Turkish embassy blamed the fighting on demonstrators who "began aggressively provoking" Turkish-American citizens who had assembled to greet Erdogan.

The comment comes as top congressional Republicans are demanding the Trump administration take swift action against the Turkish government after the president's security detail violently broke up a protest earlier in the week outside the Turkish ambassador's residence in Washington.

The slow pace of US efforts to take Islamic State strongholds Raqqa in Syria and Mosul in Iraq have produced a risky USA move in relations with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally Turkey.

At one point, Turkish Ambassador to Washington Serdar Kilic appears and shouts at one of the police officers.

The unusually pointed Turkish attack on an American official came days after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan made a trip to Washington that was dominated by issues dividing the two countries and that delivered mixed dividends, at best, for the Turkish leader.

After his talk with Erdogan, the bodyguard walks towards the protesters and Turkish security personnel at the residence of Turkish ambassador attack them immediately after Erdo─čan's bodyguard approaches towards them.

"This isn't Turkey. This isn't a third-world country", McCain said on MSNBC. Seconds later, a group of men run across the street and start punching and kicking protesters.

In their Oval Office meetings Tuesday, Trump did not mention Erdogan's increasingly tight grip on power in Turkey or allegations of irregular elections under his leadership.

Trump's approval ratings have been low for a new president, remaining mired in the high 30s to low 40s. It turns out Trump's own administration didn't agree. "Believe me, there's no collusion".

In the footage which emerged yesterday, Mr Erdogan can be seen stepping out of a vehicle and watching on from a distance as his security personnel allegedly attacked Kurdish and Armenian protesters outside the ambassador of Turkey's residence in the United States capital.

The State Department called the latest incident "deeply disturbing", insisting that a "thorough investigation that will allow us to hold the responsible individuals accountable is of the upmost importance to us".

In video captured by the Voice of America, a handful of Erdogan's supporters and his security detail rushed the demonstrators and started hitting them. The incident left 11 people injured, nine of whom were hospitalized.

Video shown by Voice of America shows Erdogan in his auto outside the Turkish Embassy on Tuesday, talking to a member of his team who then heads to the protest (roughly 0:13 in the clip).

"We clearly told them this: if there is any sort of attack from the YPG and PYD against Turkey, we will implement the rules of engagement without asking anyone", the Sabah newspaper citing him as saying. "We are telling you this now in advance", he said.

Such violence is never an appropriate response to free speech and peaceful protest.

Erdogan responded that there is there is no place for any Kurdish "terrorist organizations" in any agreement about the region's future.

Cavusoglu said Trump's administration seems more understanding about Turkey's security concerns.
