United States extends Iran nuclear deal sanctions relief, imposes new ballistic missile sanctions

The U.S. sanctioned two Iranian defense officials, an Iranian company and members of a China-based network for supporting Iran's ballistic missile program, the U.S. Treasury said in a statement Wednesday.

The targeted sanctions come on the same day the Trump administration said it would continue to waive other, broader sanctions on Iran, a move that was required to keep implementing the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Treasury Department placed sanctions on Iran over concerns about its ballistic missile programme.

On January 13, the USA imposed sanctions on 13 people and 12 entities in relation to Iran's ballistic missile programme. While Trump certainly views Iran with suspicion, it would much rather deal with Rouhani, who has been lauded as a "moderate" willing to deal with the West, than his conservative clerical challenger, Ebrahim Raisi. "Categorically", former Undersecretary of State Wendy Sherman - who led the USA negotiating team at the Iran nuclear talks - said at a panel hosted by the Cato Institute on Tuesday, which included this reporter.

"The Trump administration also has targeted Chinese national OFAC designated Chinese national Ruan Runling and three associated Chinese companies for proliferation activities in support of a key designated Iranian defense entity", according to the Treasury Department.

Washington D.C. [USA], May 18: The Trump administration has signaled that it would continue the Iran nuclear deal made under the Barack Obama administration for the meantime as the U.S.is still forming a new comprehensive Iran policy.

The US imposed sanctions against officials of Iran and one Iranian company in connection with a programme to develop ballistic missiles in the country.

Rosenstein Contradicts Trump On Comey Memo Timeline
The second question will be whether anyone in the Trump campaign colluded in the meddling. "We have two very different missions". Additionally, he said he got the impression from the briefing that Rosenstein believed there are criminal elements to it.

Tillerson at that time said the Trump administration would nonetheless review the terms of the deal because of Iran's violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions related to ballistic missile testing, as well as its backing of terrorism and taking sides in regional unrest.

However, the department also announced the imposition of new unrelated sanctions against Iranian defence officials and an Iranian "entity".

The Iranian government and some Iranian citizens have been disappointed that U.S., European Union and United Nations sanctions relief provided so far under the nuclear deal has failed to spark an economic renaissance.

"If they don't renew the waivers they will have a big mess on their hands", Timothy O'Toole, a sanctions attorney at a USA law firm told Financial Times.

The decision on the sanctions waiver represented a major early policy choice on the nuclear deal for the Trump administration, which has said that it is engaged in a wider policy review on how to deal with Iran.

The State Department report on Iran's human rights abuses, which is submitted to Congress on a semi-annual basis, will review the human rights sanctions that have been issued in the last six months, including individuals added to the USA sanctions list in April due to abuses at Tehran's Evin Prison.
