Will Smith, Almodovar open a testy Cannes Film Festival

Will Smith, Almodovar open a testy Cannes Film Festival

Cannes Film festival is an event that welcomes all the actors and actresses from every country that are working wonders. Ahead of the festival, organizers announced that next year, streaming-only films will not be selected in Cannes' competition lineup — a move applauded by French theaters and decried by Netflix.

Whooping with excitement and high-fiving reporters, Will Smith looked like he was ready to have fun as a member of the Cannes Film Festival jury that assembled in this French Riviera resort on Wednesday.

Almodovar obviously thinks the battle to preserve big-screen dominance is too important to ignore, even if it effectively suggest that Okja and The Meyerowitz Stories now have little chance of winning the Palme at festival's end on May 28, no matter how much the jury may like them.

This year's program also points to changes shaking up the film industry, including the march on Hollywood by streaming giants Netflix and Amazon and the arrival of virtual reality.

Earlier Wednesday, Pedro Almodovar, who's presiding over this year's competition jury, read a lengthy statement in which he said, "I personally can not conceive of not only the Palme d'Or, but any other prize, being given to a film and then being unable to see this film on a large screen".

"In my opinion, what is decisive when one sees a film for the first time is the size of the screen: the size should not be smaller than the chair on which you are sitting". It should not be part of your everyday setting. They go to the movies twice a week, and they watch Netflix. "Will!" "West Philadelphia is a long way from Cannes", joked an enthusiastic Smith, referring to his hometown. Netflix bring a great connectivity to them to the world. And now they get to find those artists.

"In my home, Netflix has had absolutely no effect on what they (his children) go to the movie theater to watch", he said.

And Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the ministry, left a dismissive post about the report on her Facebook page. The revelations drew strong condemnation from Democrats and a rare rebuke of Trump from some Republican lawmakers.

Last year, jury member Kirsten Dunst and pregnant Blake Lively, who was promoting Woody Allen's film Cafe Society, scored points with fashion-watchers for their string of stunning gowns, while Bella Hadid had jaws dropping with her barely there Alexandre Vauthier red frock.

Stars are arriving under tighter security than in previous years, 10 months after the truck attack in nearby Nice that killed 86 people.

When the topic was raised at the press conference Wednesday, Almodovar sided with the theater owners.

Festival director Thierry Fremaux issued a statement last week saying that only movies opening in French cinemas would make the list.

Three years ago European Parliament had backed a motion urging anti-trust regulators to get tough on Google.

"It would be an enormous paradox if the Palme d'Or went to a film that can not be seen in cinemas", he said in the jury's first press conference.
