Betty Shelby Found Not Guilty In The Shooting Death Of Terence Crutcher

A U.S. police officer who said she shot an unarmed black man "out of fear" while his hands were raised above his head has been cleared of manslaughter.

Tulsa County District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler, who charged Shelby with first-degree manslaughter in the heat of passion on September 22, has argued that Shelby, who is white, unreasonably shot Crutcher, who was black, out of fear.

"Prosecutors said Shelby acted out of fear when she shot Terence Crutcher on September 16", Matt Trotter of member station KWGS reports From Tulsa.

Crutcher's twin sister said at a news conference that she doesn't believe justice was served in her brother's death. And although Crutcher, who stood over six-feet tall and was well over 200 pounds, was not showing signs of aggression, Shelby said she knew the dangers of encountering an individual under the influence of PCP. The former deputy for the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office had completed drug-recognition expert training. Police found PCP in Crutcher's auto, and an autopsy report later revealed that Crutcher had the drug in his system at the time of his death. Shelby has insisted she did so out of fear he was reaching for a weapon inside the vehicle. "I did everything I could to stop this", she added.

On Wednesday evening, the case for the shooting death of Terence Crutcher reached a verdict.

Reverend Al Sharpton raises his hands while speaking to protesters before a peaceful 2016 march for Terence Crutcher, who was shot by Tulsa police officer Betty Shelby. He was criticized by the local Fraternal Order of Police throughout the trial, and local police officers were seen in the courtroom supporting Shelby. According to an affidavit Officer Shelby asked him if the vehicle was his but he only mumbled to himself. Reports say that once the jury handed in their verdict and heard it read, they started crying. Authorities later determined that Crutcher did not have a gun.

In the courthouse on Monday, the officer claimed she shot Crutcher because she "feared for her life" and that she "did everything I could to stop this".

Although Shelby's original testimony, in which she claimed Crutcher's hands were not visible when she shot him after responding to a call about a man and a auto potentially on the verge of an explosion, was directly proven false by video footage.

Crutcher's family was understandably upset over the verdict.

Tulsa County District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler said he is "moving forward" after the verdict.

"Let it be known that I believe in my heart that Betty Shelby got away with murder", Crutcher's father, the Rev. Joey Crutcher, said after the verdict was announced. Her attorneys called other police officers who had previous run-ins with Crutcher where he was allegedly "noncompliant" and "defiant", resulting in a stun gun being used on one occasion.
