BJP plays the Dalit card in choosing Kovind

After the NDA announced its decision to pick Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind as its choice for the upcoming presidential elections, Congress on Monday alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took the decision "unilaterally" without consulting the Opposition.

Speaking on NDA naming Ram Nath Kovind as its candidate for the Presidential polls, Banerjee said: "In order to support someone, we must know the person. I am sure Shri Ram Nath Kovind will make an exceptional president and continue to be a strong voice for the poor, downtrodden and marginalised", Mr. Modi tweeted after the decision of the parliamentary board meeting became public.

PM Modi also spoke with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar (JD-U), Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik (BJD), Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao (TRS) and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu (TDP).

With both the names suggested by it - RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and noted agriculturist M S Swaminathan - rejected, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray said the Dalit candidate was chosen merely for vote-bank politics. Jagan gave this assurance to the BJP chief when the latter called him over the phone this afternoon seeking the YSRC's support for the ruling coalition's nominee. Terming the BJP's efforts to reach out to the opposition through its senior leaders as a "formality and a PR exercise", Azad said the ruling party should have built consensus before announcing the candidate.

Kovind as an NDA choice can not be easily rejected or defeated by the opposition parties as he is known as a non-controversial BJP politician.

On two occasions in the past, the Shiv Sena had deviated from the NDA line by supporting UPA candidates: in 2007 when Pratibha Patil won the election and in 2012 when incumbent Pranab Mukherjee was elected.

He also called on BJP president Amit Shah.

Notably, BJP National President today announced Bihar Governor Ramnath Kovind as its candidate for next President of India.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that there are other Dalit leaders in the country who are fir for this role.

By picking Kovind, BJP and the RSS leaders have given a fresh push to their strategy of integrating Dalits into Hindu society.

Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray on Monday said that if someone is trying to make a Dalit a President with the goal of gaining a vote bank then we are not with them.

Clarifying that she don't consider Kovind unfit for the post, Mamata added that there are bigger Dalit leaders in the country than him. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.N. Anantha Kumar, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and BJP chief whip Rakesh Singh arrange for the other signatures on these papers. We are against it, but we will have to discuss the issue within the CPI and with other opposition parties.

President Election of India has broken the Opposition parties yet again.

He said the meetings with opposition parties was a formality.

But Janata Dal (United) leaders admitted that Kovind's candidature has put them in a dilemma.
