Britain Kicks Off Brexit Talks With European Union

Official talks, led for Britain by Brexit Secretary David Davis, and by Michel Barnier, on behalf of the EU, began at 11am today at the European Commission's headquarters. "That will be in our mutual interest, but we 27 will formulate our interests very clearly and hopefully together".

He suggested the Tories might get May to concede on parts of the Brexit divorce that are important to the European Union but unpopular for UK Brexiteers, allow her take the flak and then drop her for a new Prime Minister who would have a free run at negotiating the trade deal.

European Union negotiator Michel Barnier said the negotiations which should lead to a breakup by March 2019 "must first tackle the uncertainties caused by Brexit - first for citizens, but also for the beneficiaries of the European Union policies and for the impact on borders, in particular Ireland".

European stocks rose on Monday, partly on optimism about the talks actually getting underway after months of sniping and uncertainty, analysts said.

Davis was flanked at the negotiating table by Olly Robbins, the senior civil servant at the Department for Exiting the European Union, and Sir Tim Barrow, the UK's ambassador to the EU. The election left an image of a dysfunctional Britain coming up against a well-oiled European Union negotiating machine.

Barnier has said a divorce deal should be ready by October next year to give time for parliamentary approval.

May officially triggered the two-year Brexit process in March when she was riding high in opinion polls, and called for fresh elections shortly afterwards to shore up her mandate for a tough Brexit stance.

By notifying by letter to Brussels the British intention to leave the EU on 29 March, May unveiled the negotiating objectives, including resolving the situation of the 3.2 million EU citizens living in the United Kingdom and the 1, 2 million Britons residing in other countries of the Union.

The issue most likely to torpedo negotiations is Britain's bill for leaving the bloc.

Leo Varadkar set to become Taoiseach
Paying tribute to Mr Kenny, Mr Varadkar said: "I have no doubt, only for him, this country as we know it would not be here today". Once nominated, Mr Varadkar will travel to Aras an Uachtarain (President's residence) to meet President Michael D.

The government's plan for the next parliament will be outlined in the Queen's speech on Wednesday, and will include laws needed to deliver Brexit and new immigration legislation.

British foreign minister Boris Johnson, like Davis a prominent backer of the leave campaign, also sounded an upbeat note.

The center-left Social Democrat strongly criticized May's Conservatives, saying that they "played with the emotions of citizens in Britain, told fake news about Europe and left people unclear about what consequences this would all have".

"I believe it will be a great settlement between Britain and the EU", Johnson wrote in the Sunday Times newspaper, adding: "one that will end the bickering and resistance that has marked so much of our relationship over the last few decades".

"The most important thing for us is to look to the horizon, raise our eyes to the horizon".

That source, and another in the Conservative party, said May's misjudged election gamble had undermined her authority, leaving her in the thrall of the two wings of her party that have differing views for Brexit - "purists" who want a clean break and "remainers" pressing for close ties. "The U.K. has chose to leave the EU".

Last week President Macron told Theresa May that Brits could still change their minds about Brexit and the door was open to remain in the EU.

Meanwhile, according to reports the Brexit negotiations may be a very dry affair. He added: "Brexit won't make anything better, but it will make a lot of things more hard".
